Certainly individual, moral agency occupies a remarkably privileged place, according to Joseph and Brigham, in cosmological history and in Mormon theology. Given these positions on freedom of will and man’s ontological autonomy, one might expect to find in Mormonism an uncommon hostility toward dogma, hierarchy and church authority. Indeed Joseph affirmed the sanctity of conscience when he insisted that he only taught his people “correct principles, and they govern themselves,” elsewhere adding that “we are not disposed, had we the power, to deprive any of exercising that free independence of mind that heaven has so graciously bestowed upon the human family as one of its choicest gifts.” So it is all the more ironic that the church Joseph founded is one of the most centralized, hierarchical, authoritarian churches in America to come out of an era famous for the “democratization of religion.”
