Here is the latest on the decline of scouting. There seems to be some question about whether it will continue to survive....

Scouting in Bankruptcy
"It doesn't have to be about the Church (church) all the time!" -- SD
"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. No price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself."
A man asked Jesus "do all roads lead to you?" Jesus responds,”most roads don’t lead anywhere, but I will travel any road to find you.” Adapted from The Shack, William Young

Re: Scouting in Bankruptcy
I'm torn. I'd hate to see the institution disappear but I also hate it for the victims.
I'm not very familiar with the case. Did the BSA actively protect/shield/hide abusers or is it just an organization that has deep pockets?
If scoutmaster Bob abused kids, go after scoutmaster Bob. If scoutmaster Bob abused kids, the BSA knew about it, and the BSA did nothing, go after the BSA.

I think it's more this, similar to the Catholic Church. I think they often knew and looked the other way, reassigned some perverts, or simply told the perverts they couldn't be with them any more - but didn't report them.
I respect Scouting as an organization and the leadership values they teach and I would hate to see them totally disintegrate. They have made changes to their former policies, and the bankruptcy seems to be designed to protect them from losing every last dime and be able to continue. It should be noted that local councils are corporately independent, including financially, and are not necessarily part of the lawsuits or the bankruptcy. Frankly I think it no coincidence that the loss of 400,000 Scouts and all the associated fees came right before this filing.
In the absence of knowledge or faith there is always hope.
Once there was a gentile...who came before Hillel. He said "Convert me on the condition that you teach me the whole Torah while I stand on one foot." Hillel converted him, saying: That which is despicable to you, do not do to your fellow, this is the whole Torah, and the rest is commentary, go and learn it."

From a financial perspective, I had the same thought. Tough to weather a financial crisis when you have lost that amount of income. The article is vague about finances -- saying they have assets of 1 Billion and liabilities of 500 Million to 1 Billion. That's a pretty wide range. They also said annual revenues for 245 Million a year. I believe there will be subsequent loss of membership from non-LDS sources as well due to the scandal.
It sounds like the BSA did know about some leaders who abused boys and soft-pedaled it from the article.

Re: Scouting in Bankruptcy
It was my understanding as well that some cases were similar to those within the church (as well as the Catholics) that offenders were not banished but moved to different areas (ie different callings etc.) rather than outright separation and prosectution. Reforming the sinner, etc.
Never should have happened like that but they are now dealing with the consequences of covering up and minimizing their knowledge.
