Can We Talk about The Atonement?

Yesterday, one of our topics in the Sacrament Meeting talks was the atonement. It's a central tenet of Christian belief, and it's certainly an appropriate topic for Church (a whole lot better than most of the topics, TBH). But I have always had some nagging questions in my mind about why an atonemen...

Re: Another TR and Garment Issue/Question

I've seen DW's new garment tops. Compared to my garment tops, hers are practically a tank top. Garment tops for women weren't like that even a few short years ago. The garment was modified to accommodate clothing styles. Whether that's the reason for the change is questionable, though. The new tops...

Re: Coddling of the American Mind

I did a post based on this book a while back: https://wheatandtares.org/2018/11/27/fairness-feminism-and-football/ To give the quick version of the post, a problem I had with the book (which I did enjoy overall, but feel it's got this serious flaw) is that it doesn't do enough to question male privi...

Ostler's Bridges: A great review

I just finished reading this great review of David Ostler's new book Bridges about faith crisis. He did a survey of hundreds of faith-crisis having young adults and also of leaders due to a calling he held. His book is insightful, and the data very interesting. For one thing, the leaders he surveyed...

Re: New visitors welcome TV commercials

I have mixed reactions to this. - I agree with nibbler that the church is tougher on its members and less welcome to the fringe members than it is welcoming to converts. - I do think the church is mostly a positive force for converts in their lives, but there can be an eventual diminishing return, a...

Why Churches Work

I read this interesting article in The Atlantic about the rise and fall of non-religious churches, an experiment that came about because people who had left religion still felt interest in a weekly congregation experience. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/07/secular-churches-rethink-th...

Re: Women and Priesthood

"The past is a foreign country. Its customs and cultural assumptions are different from ours." And that's where our church leaders live. Not in the world we live in. We have a lot of information about the past, though, even if it's not the world we inhabit. The way men & women were viewed in the pas...

Re: Missionary Payment going up

I agree with Roadrunner, that this is lower than the cost of NOT being on a mission. Plus, it's still less than I paid monthly in 1989.

Re: Are relationships really capable of lasting forever?

I think it depends on what we mean by "relationship." If it means the person is active in your life on a regular basis, then I do think these run their course over time. If it means that we have a pool of mutual well-wishers with whom we occasionally connect, to me that's more sustainable. My best c...

Re: FM Changes

Minyan Man: Kirton-McConkie would settle that thing so fast, your head would spin. The church would not want the bad PR. However, my guess is that one's standing in the church would be jeopardized by suing it, if not officially, then certainly in some unofficial way. I heard a completely bootleg uno...
