Re: What exactly is a spiritual experience?
I bought but haven't yet read the book Gerald Lund just did on personal revelation. I almost feel like I could write my own book on it. I love your idea of gathering those spiritual experiences you have heard about. The key, IMO, is that regardless of your spiritual experiences, you can't "prove" an...

Re: I have great hope for this forum.
That's going into my file of great stories, along with the David O. McKay drinking Coke story. I hadn't heard that one before.

Re: I have great hope for this forum.
One thing I like to remember is that the church belongs to all of us as members, not just to the leaders. I'm just as much a Mormon as anyone else in the church. That sounds like "fighting words," yet it's not. I just think that like all human organizations, some people think they own the place. ;) ...

Re: Okay I'll say it, Polygamy
Sally M - FWIW, I don't like it either. Not one bit. I can't think of a scenario in which I would comply with it. But as I said, I also don't want to dismiss the perspective of those women who found it repugnant yet felt they had a spiritual witness they should participate. Now, the men, OTOH, I don...

Re: All or Nothing
Its a pity many have this all or nothing mindset..it is hard to fight...but I may not want or now accept it "all"...but I know I do not want "nothing" also! I really relate to what you are saying. I think the key is that once you have taken the "backstage tour," you start to get an idea for how thi...

Re: What has helped?
There are some books that are pretty good at helping to see life as less literal:
The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz
The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo
A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle

Re: The First Vision
I had a dream in college that was very vivid to me. I wrote it down at the time because it was so realistic and hard to shake. A few months later, I was talking about that dream with someone and I realized that there was more going on in that dream that what hit me at the time. When I recorded it, I...

Re: All or Nothing
Sometimes prayer is really just seeking for a sign. People want God to answer very clearly that He exists or that He wants you to do X,Y, or Z. It's really easy to get the idea in your head that "If I just get this one answer, I won't have to ask any more questions." There's a real tendency to turn ...

Re: Okay I'll say it, Polygamy
Bushman said Joseph lusted for kin more than he lusted for women. To me he seems to have a bottomless pit of need for family. He also seemed to not really understand the endowment or the principles of sealing very clearly. He seems to be not just making it up as he goes, but trying to make sense of ...

Re: What exactly is a spiritual experience?
Sally M - welcome, and I loved your story. I guess I have a few observations about spiritual experiences. What they are not (IMO): - just normal emotional responses to touching stories or AT&T commercials, feelings of inadequacy or gratitude (80% of what passes for spiritual experiences in F&T mtg) ...
