Re: Non-tithing unforgivable???

On a related note, one of my daughters (who is not active) has a friend who grew up around and “with” some members who were . . . strictly, stronger than normal, orthodox. She has written a play about that experience that is representative of her experience but nowhere close to my daughter’s experie...

Re: Non-tithing unforgivable???

Never heard it - or anything close to it.

I really wish these sort of exceptions weren’t reported as fact, but I get it - and I don’t blame the person who said it or the reporter.

Re: Church and Investment Fund manager pay fine to SEC

I respect that view, nibbler, and don't reject it. It is part of my both/and. I also would love to see a strict view of tithing de-emphasized - but I also know the leadership truly see it as both a command and a blessing. My own middle ground is a vast expansion of welfare assistance, especially for...

Re: Elder Oaks clarifies church support for Marriage Act

While I wish we could support same-sex marriage inside the Church, I like that we are officially supporting it for those outside the Church who want it. It is not my ideal, but it is improvement - and I think it better aligns with the 11th Article of Faith.

Re: Church and Investment Fund manager pay fine to SEC

I see this as a complicated both/and, not a simple either/or. On the side of the church: 1) I think the leadership didn't believe what they were doing was illegal. I think they did get legal advise about how to keep the investment amount private, for the basic reasons mentioned by Roy, and trusted t...

Re: Anyone Here Still Follow John Dehlin Or Bill Reel

I think there is a good example of how difficult this issue can be in the Bible. The Gospels tell different versions of the ministry of Jesus. In some cases (fairly numerous), they contradict each other. A very simple example is Jesus fasting in the wilderness. Matthew describes a typical Jewish fas...

Re: Temple ceremony changes (again)

I really like the new version - and my wife absolutely loves the changes. It would be a bit difficult to make it more male/female equal. Of note, there is no reference at all to Eve being given to Adam OR being commanded to stay with him. I also appreciate what was added to the previous version and ...

Re: Mormon Heritage - Faith/Doctrine Point As "Furniture"

I have loved that quote for a while. I use the general concept a lot, in various phrasings.

Please put in the Useful Quotes of the Day thread.

I do not. They aren't geared toward active members like me.
