Re: Fall General Conference 2021

My life has been hectic lately, but I still am planning on doing a post summarizing the talks, with my reactions. It just is taking longer than I had hoped.

Re: Fall General Conference 2021

I was working and missed conference this time, but my wife shared some things from a few talks that seemed really good.

I will share some things when I get a chance, but it might be a few days. The first half of this week is very busy.

Re: Three Questions

In Matthew, "perfect" means "whole, complete, fully-developed" - not mistake free.

That alone changes everything in important ways, since it allows for mistakes / sins and makes the goal pure repentance (nothing more than continued effort to change).

Re: BYU Housing Rule Change

I think Roy's last paragraph is spot-on. Having worked in higher ed for nearly a decade, I agree the new policy essentially makes approved housing mirror freshmen dorms. Given the recent spike in construction costs, it makes financial sense for BYU to allow landlords to become the keepers of freshme...

Re: How do you stay when you don't believe?

I know how to speak fluent Mormonese and offer my heterodox views in that faithful language. I do so quietly and without an argumentative tone. I also wouldn't say I don't believe but rather that I believe differently - and I believe the LDS Church is just as "true and living" as any other Christian...

Re: Book of Mormon contains the Fulness of the Gospel?

It all depends on how one defines "the Gospel". I like the simple Biblical definition, which is, essentially, that Jesus frees otherwise captive people. The Book of Mormon certainly contains that. So does the New Testament - but interpretations of that over time have obscured it (in the Bible, and, ...

Re: Three Questions

Yes, I know who I am - and what I don't know I intentionally choose to accept and structure according to what I want my faith to be. Yes, I understand what happened to me - as well as over 40 years of thinking about it (since my teenage years) can bring understanding. Yes, I want to continue living ...

Re: Definitions from President Oaks

No. I think it is overly broad and not reflective of their actual feelings and beliefs.

This is not the place to continue this discussion. Peace.

Re: Question on LDS rules on sex and why no counseling about it

For clarity:

LDS Family Services includes counseling, which includes marriage counseling for people who need it. Sex can be part of that counseling.

As with any other counseling organization, results can vary by counselor - and by personality match with the client(s).

Re: Definitions from President Oaks

I think Oaks (like Bedar) is saying that black lives don't matter, just Christian lives do. I am not sure that is a fair statement, given all of its implications and what I know of what he actually has said in his lifetime (as well as our actual theology about who is saved and who can be exalted, e...
