Re: Compare & Contrast...

My point in this is that it makes no sense to me when someone complains that the church is too authoritarian in one breath and then complains in the next breath that members are somewhat hypocritical in what they say and do. This looks like a reality disconnect to me. If the church is authoritarian...

Re: Compare & Contrast...

I mentioned this in the other post. The church doesn't really do a good job of teaching people correct principles anymore. The church is more concerned with teaching members to obey authority figures. The principle being taught is to embrace authoritarianism. This has been one of my bigger complain...

Re: I gave my talk

Thank you for letting us know how your talk went. I'm glad to hear it went so well for you. Giving that talk taught me I can be a light for others and still be true to myself. Back when I taught 17yo Sunday school, I was still pretty raw and damaged from my faith crisis. When I taught, I never follo...

Re: Purpose of mortal life

I posted this as a response previously but outside of suffering - what is it that we can get out of this life that we cannot get from any other experience in all of eternity? Again I do not want to discridit all the good things you are suggesting except to wonder if such thing cannot be learned out...

Re: The relationship of G-d to man

I'll focus on your principles 3 and 4, as those are the ones that I feel I most agree with... with an asterisk. I believe that whatever God does is for our benefit eventually . I'll give two anecdotes that hopefully illustrate why I believe as I do. Both of them have to do with death. All of what I ...

Re: I need your help

A few Sundays ago, my wife and I were asked to give a talk in sacrament meeting about one of the sections in Come Follow Me. When I was preparing the talk, I also ran into the problem of figuring out what to talk about. I could've gone the route of just repeating the traditional dogma, but I wouldn'...

Re: Bold Road to True Spiritual Progress - LDS Daily

I didn't care for most of it. Throughout the article, he mentions Christ's love, but makes it sound like His love is supposed to be tough love. I liked the direction he was going in the middle. Being proactive and strengthening ourselves so that we can better live in the world. But he lost me toward...

Re: Purpose of mortal life

I disagree with the word "Psychopathic." It has all sorts of negative connotations and approaches name calling (that is against StayLDS guidelines). Name calling is far from what I was trying to do. My mention of it was just referring to the disconnect that can go along with psychopathy. ...

Re: Purpose of mortal life

My first step in determining what possible intent all mortal life must experience – was to determine what every mortal must (regardless of all things possible) experience. In other words, what is the lowest common denominator for all mortals. As I listed in the initial post – I could only come up w...

Re: Purpose of mortal life

In the big picture, my thought is that we are here to experience whatever it is He wants us to experience. In the short term that is our current life, it's nearly impossible to know exactly how we and our actions fit in His grand scheme and what our purpose might be. So why try? If it all will work ...
