Re: Chapel Mormonism

Thank you for all of the replies and for sharing your experience. I have a relative who left the Church about three years ago and went to his bishop recently and said he would like to come back and participate as a non-believing member and purely on a social level. The bishop basically, said no. Was...

Chapel Mormonism

I feel like my faith crisis probably started in 2008 and went through many iterations. I will probably keep changing, but feel like I've landed in a good place in my relationship with the Church: I have a testimony of the goodness of Mormonism and the Mormon way of life, I'm usually able to find som...

Re: Discontinuing General Women's and Priesthood sessions of General Conference

This will probably not be popular, but I actually have mixed feelings about this. I think the reasons people articulated for getting rid of it are good. This meeting got so switched around that it was hard to keep track and know what it was going to be. As a male, I thought it actually provided a go...

Re: Richard's Rohr's 3 Stages

I’ve gone from devout Mormon to nuanced to atheist, back to nuanced, back to atheist again, etc. I still haven’t found a way for the broken pieces to fit together. I can appreciate that and hope you make peace with whatever you decide. I do think at a certain point you can only deconstruct so long ...

Richard's Rohr's 3 Stages

Richard Rohr's book "Falling Upward" totally changed my perspective on faith and really helped me reach a new place in my faith journey. Not sure if others have had that experience. For me, the whole book could have been about a Mormon faith crisis, but he comes from the Catholic tradition and works...

Re: Jesus Cleansing the Temple

I am not sure that the earliest garments were intended to be worn all the time as is the intention with modern garments. I read one quote arguing that you should always have your garments on under your clothing in case you are asked to participate in an impromptu/emergency prayer circle. I found th...

Re: Jesus Cleansing the Temple

The temple represents the proverbial motivating carrot for orthodox believers. It's come to represent the pinnacle of Mormon worship. The promise of attending the temple can be a motivating goal for members to become more active and obedient. I think this is one of the most troubling aspects for me...

Re: Jesus Cleansing the Temple

Great thoughts, I appreciate the comments. I have renewed my recommend, but mainly to attend weddings, etc. and don't know if I ever will re-integrate the temple back into my faith paradigm. Good to hear that others have given themselves permission for that not to happen. Another temple question I h...

Jesus Cleansing the Temple

Perhaps no part of the New Testament creates more dissonance for LDS readers than the story of Jesus overturning tables and driving out money changers in the temple. It does not at all seem to fit into our philosophy on Jesus or paradigm about the temple. We kind of settle on this idea that the temp...

Re: Covid-19 and religious freedom

For me, this talk sounded like we were complaining about ash on our lawn after our neighbor's house burned down . . .
