Re: Non-tithing unforgivable???
Yeah, I was trying to be nebulous and nice. I agree we're missing a lot, or in other words we don't really have any more than what other Christians have (and some other Christians do better than we do). I do believe we have as core tenets the same core tenets as other Christians, and that's importa...

Re: Non-tithing unforgivable???
Yes, indeed Amy, we all see through that same glass (or similar glasses) darkly. And I agree that perhaps we are missing some things here and there but most leaders and true believers won't (or can't) admit that. I see it as "we are missing most things" with profound consequences. If &quo...

Re: Religious OCD: Medium Blog Post
I think another thing I really appreciate about this blog is that the author (Miki Eliza) is a self proclaimed active member of the church but none of the answers to what to do about religious OCD are "pray more" (or "pray it away") or "read the Book of Mormon" (or scr...

Re: Non-tithing unforgivable???
On a related topic, I take as my default now that "we don't understand scriptures" and/or "messages from God" as an absolute truth you can "take to the bank" rather then the faith-promoting, "We are imperfect and are probably missing a few things". We know tha...

Re: Non-tithing unforgivable???
This works if the YW leader was talking about "tithing" as a proxy variable for "institutional loyalty". Especially in the story of Nephi and Laban was "loyalty to God [and God's causes]" more important than "murder".

Re: Religious OCD: Medium Blog Post
Another perspective that I see about this topic is that "the church" as an organization "sold their narrative" of being "chosen" and "the source of Truth" so well and so often that an individual's worth gets anchored in "the church" and the individua...

Re: The Mormons are Coming
Fill people's emotional voids with their lies? I guess she does declare her own bias as an atheist, still I wonder if she would feel that free to describe the Catholic or Presbyterian church in that way. As a self described atheist I doubt they'd have any compunction about applying much of this to ...

Mormon Heritage - Faith/Doctrine Point As "Furniture"
I follow this blog about religious news around the world because I find what they present and (in general) how they present it to be valuable. I have given a lot of thought about a famous quote stated by Amos Oz (cited in this article): https://religionnews.com/2022/10/07/judaism-israel-yom-kippur/ ...

Re: Temple ceremony changes (again)
I hear some of the modernization of language used in the temple was also applied to at least one covenant that people make. I'm hearing the, "I made covenant ABC when I went through the temple but now people make covenant XYZ. Which covenant am I held to?" questioning starting back up. Th...

Re: Maybe it's just time to hang it up
Sometimes leaving the church, formally or informally, is the best thing for an individual. Similar to marriage in that respect - sometimes a relationship can be saved and sometimes it can't. May you find the peace you seek. It just seems the writing is on the wall. I have 2 years left in a ysa ward...
