Re: God is There but He's Not

Anyway, the preface has a quote from Aldous Huxley that made sense: God is, but at the same time God is not. The Universe is governed by blind chance and at the same time by a providence with ethical preoccupations. Suffering is gratuitous and pointless, but also valuable and necessary. The univers...

Re: Importance of the priesthood

My questions for everyone here are, what are your thoughts and/or beliefs in regards to the priesthood? Do you believe it has actual, tangible power? Does someone being a priesthood holder make them a better person or at least require that they live at a higher standard? And does the priesthood hav...

Re: Temple and Family History Leader

I don't know how much help the dead truly need from us. I guess making a difference is in the eye of the beholder. We, as a church, really believe that receiving ordinances makes a difference. It gets sold that "we are helping them" - and I am now convinced that that is partially an illus...

Re: Meds for Personal Happiness

I have often wondered if God will censure us for not controlling our thoughts within the 40% range, using meds to handle that part of it, perhaps by influencing the 50% genetic part instead. I hope not. Also, if HE does mention this to me, I would probably ask, respectfully, what else could be done...

Re: My Life Seems to Have a Plan

I could have written this, it is essentially where I am at as well. Except the last paragraph. I gave up on prayer a long time ago. I do on occasion pray, but it's more for me than it is for God and I expect nothing from it. I will admit that often during these prayers I do get a distinctive peacef...

Re: Meds for Personal Happiness

I ended up laying down for about 3 hours this weekend in a darkened room because I did not take migraine medication "ahead of time" enough. I knew the migraine was coming- these is a cyclical thing for me now that I mark on my calendar, my stress levels were through the roof for reasons, a...

Re: I'm Thinking About Becoming More Active In Church

AmyJ, thanks for what you said about infirmity, even if some of it's a little over my head. Haha. It's okay, though. I think I get what you were trying to say. Yes, many people, especially communities, don't like momentum breakers. There are times when I've had a great momentum going on when doing ...

Re: I'm Thinking About Becoming More Active In Church

I'm reminded of the scripture Alma 7:12 And [Jesus] will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to suc...

Re: Compare & Contrast...

As much as I would like to be or think otherwise - in over 76 years of experience and with all my effort - the bless them that curse you thing -- I have not made much progresss. My father and my mother could do that and a few others I have known (my wife included and a couple of general authorities...

Re: My Life Seems to Have a Plan

... and all the evils we experienced will somehow be made right. That's one of the things that helped crack the nut for me. What is "made right?" Person A might feel like action P is what is required as restitution but action P might be a "wrong" in person B's eyes. Person B mig...
