Re: Non-tithing unforgivable???
Yes, indeed Amy, we all see through that same glass (or similar glasses) darkly. And I agree that perhaps we are missing some things here and there but most leaders and true believers won't (or can't) admit that. I see it as "we are missing most things" with profound consequences. If &quo...

Re: Non-tithing unforgivable???
On a related topic, I take as my default now that "we don't understand scriptures" and/or "messages from God" as an absolute truth you can "take to the bank" rather then the faith-promoting, "We are imperfect and are probably missing a few things". We know th...

Re: Non-tithing unforgivable???
I have to say that I have never heard that the idea of not paying tithing as unforgivable before, so that it interesting. I honestly wonder about the source and how active and involved the individual was to begin with. And sometimes those with an ax to grind have been known to exaggerate a bit - but...

Re: Religious OCD: Medium Blog Post
Forgot a few: You're regularly subjected to worthiness interviews. Your ability to prove your worthiness determines your level of participation in the church. Worthiness (or ability to qualify) are very important things. If you're paying attention at church and if you're trying at all, you're going...

Re: Religious OCD: Medium Blog Post
I agree Arrakeen and Nibbler. I also think "we" (as a church) tend to throw Satan's influence in for good measure sometimes. RMN has been known to talk about Satan, almost as if he knows him. Just for the record, I don't believe there actually is a Satan, and if there were I don't think a ...

Re: Religious OCD: Medium Blog Post
I think another thing I really appreciate about this blog is that the author (Miki Eliza) is a self proclaimed active member of the church but none of the answers to what to do about religious OCD are "pray more" (or "pray it away") or "read the Book of Mormon" (or scri...

Re: Religious OCD: Medium Blog Post
Good article Roy. As I read I recognized many of the behaviors is people I know and even some in myself (although for the most part past tense). Our church culture takes the idea of exact obedience and staying on the “strait and narrow” quite far — in my opinion, a bit too far — and that certainly a...

Re: The Mormons are Coming
Deseret News has an article on the show. The author, Tad Walch, admits he hasn't seen it but offers his perspective anyway. https://www.deseret.com/faith/2023/3/3/23621026/bbcs-england-mtc-doc-mormons-are-coming Under the "cringy stuff" part of the article there's this line: Missionaries d...

Re: The Mormons are Coming
And yet. To an atheist especially, which I am, there is something so unsettling about the ranks of shining faces beaming atop crisp white shirts and black ties or modest dresses awaiting instruction on how to persuade people to their way of thinking. Or, to put it more strongly, convince them of a ...

Re: Church and Investment Fund manager pay fine to SEC
I put forward a few assumptions: 1) Church leaders are trying to be "good stewards" of the "Lord's funds." 2) There is concern that if it were more widely known how much wealth the church has, people would be less likely to pay tithing. 3) Church leaders genuinely believe people...
