Re: I like Terryl Givens
I had the privilege of attending an event at which he (and Fiona) spoke. I was also able to meet them in person. They are both delightful. I am an unabashed fan and highly recommend some of their books (my favorite being All Things New: Rethinking Sin, Salvation, and Everything in Between).

Re: How to deal with bishops who ask extra questions, re. temple recommends
Leaders are "allowed" to ask other than the standard questions if your answer to a standard question may prompt clarification. "I try hard" is an acceptable answer to the question about being honest, but not so much for the chastity question ;) . If clarification or follow up are...

Re: Dating outside of the church - thoughts?
I wouldn't say a seven month relationship was a total wash out. You learned some things about relationships and dating. As to non-members. I dated non-members back in the day. The expectations are certainly different. If you live in a predominantly Mormon area some non-members are less willing to da...

Re: Topics I don't hear at church anymore...
The general focus from the top the last few years has been principles over rules, due largely to different cultures around the world, so things that fall almost completely or even mostly under “rules” have been de-emphasized. (For example, “dating” at a specific age is seen VERY differently around ...

Re: Topics I don't hear at church anymore...
I do think there was a wholesale realization by the Q15 that things like food storage, journal keeping, etc., really had almost nothing to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I agree with Nibbler that the change has not been as quickly as I'd like (and there are old holdovers in my own ward/stake) I...

Re: Limits of Reframing
How far can you reinterpret LDS beliefs before you can no longer be considered LDS? Can you ever be outside the boundaries of the LDS church except by your own definition? (other than through resignation or church disciplinary action) I think, as you point out, it is highly subjective. I suppose fr...

Re: Stake Conference this past weekend
I stopped attending priesthood altogether right around the time they dissolved the ward high priests group. My experience was opposite of what I've often seen reported by others. I found the high priests group more nuanced and the conversations more open, vulnerable, and stimulating. I found elder'...

Re: Stake Conference this past weekend
The LDS church of the 1980's up to the 2010's is my heritage and was my community. There are lots of people who anchored my family in real life and provided a community for us. It worked well right up until it didn't for me personally. I understand and appreciate that point of view Amy and MM. Whil...

Re: Stake Conference this past weekend
I have also noted that another way that our church deals with bad things happening to good people is what I call the "currant bush doctrine." In this teaching, God has a very specific and personalized plan for each of us. If one person is going through a personal hell, then perhaps God is...

Re: Joseph Smith's Uncanonized Revelations
I had not heard of this work before you mentioned it here MM. I was aware that Joseph received may "revelations" which are not included in the D&C. Some of that is apparently for very good reason because they seem to be contradictory to other material included in the D&C. Other stu...
