Scientific progress does not necessitate the elimination of art and religion. It is not black and white. As humans, we are complex. Religion has it's place in finding truth.
I see gross literalism both amongst the fundamentalists and the militant atheists... if they act like this on religious matters, I wonder how they approach music, painting or even the novel. It is something I see spreading in our culture.
I hate to use the left brain/right brain analogy - it is inaccurate in terms of neurologu, but it has some sense of the two sides of human intelligence. There is the logical side of our culture, which is of great use to us. Unfortunately, focusing exclusively on that will make us unhappy and unsatisfied, since we are essentially an emotional species. I see that happening on a huge scale - much of western population is doped up to avoid confronting it. On the other side, we have the dreams, the arts etc - if we focus exclusively on those, we will not meet our material needs.
DASH1730 "An Area Authority...[was] asked...who...would go to the Telestial kingdom. His answer: "murderers, adulterers and a lot of surprised Mormons!"'
1ST PRES 1978 "[LDS] believe...there is truth in many religions and philosophies...good and great religious leaders... have raised the spiritual, moral, and ethical awareness of their people. When we speak of The [LDS] as the only true church...it is...authorized to administer the ordinances...by Jesus Christ... we do not mean... it is the only teacher of truth."

I think we are also a spiritual species.
I agree with you that happiness and fulfillment, from what I gather you are saying, can be reached through the different areas like religion and art and literature. Social sciences.
I also think we go through cycles. We get less spiritual...and then...reformations happen to bring things back that people miss.
Feeling the spirit can become something very different in our future society than how the 1800s pioneers framed it.
Luke: "Why didn't you tell me? You told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father."
Obi-Wan: "Your father... was seduced by the dark side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true... from a certain point of view."
Luke: "A certain point of view?"
Obi-Wan: "Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to...depend greatly on our point of view."
