Same-Sex Families Being Added to the LDS Church's Family Search Database

Post by Curt Sunshine » 13 Jun 2018, 21:27

This is significant, if only currently in its recognition of same-sex families as legitimate families on one's family tree.

I see through my glass, darkly - as I play my saxophone in harmony with the other instruments in God's orchestra. (h/t Elder Joseph Wirthlin)

Even if people view many things differently, the core Gospel principles (LOVE; belief in the unseen but hoped; self-reflective change; symbolic cleansing; striving to recognize the will of the divine; never giving up) are universal.

"For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong." H. L. Mencken

I think that great news! Unfortunately, one of the comments from the website said that recording same-sex marriages isn't the same as condoning them. Well, I still think that great news!

I just saw this news, too, and I am elated. Yeah, acknowledging that they exist does not mean condoning them, but it's still huge. It's saying, "These are families!" It's moving forward and that's definitely better than the alternative.

In the long run, I don't think it's so much a matter of what the Church condones; God's judgment isn't contingent upon the Church's approval, and my personal feelings are that He values these non-traditional families as long as they are loving and nurturing.

Having come from a family where there were lots of divorces, second marriages, and children from both (or more) marriages I have always found it difficult to enter information like that into Family Search. They don't really make it easy. It is in fact easier to enter a child out of wedlock (like me) unless you're also trying to put in a father's info. I have five half siblings from four different fathers (five fathers total) so I know what I'm talking about. So while I see this as positive, I'm not optimistic it will be easy.
In the absence of knowledge or faith there is always hope.

Once there was a gentile...who came before Hillel. He said "Convert me on the condition that you teach me the whole Torah while I stand on one foot." Hillel converted him, saying: That which is despicable to you, do not do to your fellow, this is the whole Torah, and the rest is commentary, go and learn it."

The double amazement to me is that the Deseret News published this diddy. That alone says something is on the move. Sometimes it is so hard to be ahead of the pack. Ah.
"I stayed because it was God and Jesus Christ that I wanted to follow and be like, not individual human beings." Chieko Okazaki Dialogue interview

"I am coming to envision a new persona for the Church as humble followers of Jesus Christ....Joseph and his early followers came forth with lots of triumphalist rhetoric, but I think we need a new voice, one of humility, friendship and service. We should teach people to believe in God because it will soften their hearts and make them more willing to serve." - Richard Bushman

It's like Kremlinology. Seeing the changes in the line-up atop Lenin's tomb on Mayday... and trying to work out who's next in line to succeed Brezhnev/Andropov etc...

Or in this case reading Pravda and trying to work out the changes in the party line. In this case, what the attitude to gay marriage is.
DASH1730 "An Area Authority...[was] asked...who...would go to the Telestial kingdom. His answer: "murderers, adulterers and a lot of surprised Mormons!"'
1ST PRES 1978 "[LDS] believe...there is truth in many religions and philosophies...good and great religious leaders... have raised the spiritual, moral, and ethical awareness of their people. When we speak of The [LDS] as the only true church...it is...authorized to administer the ordinances...by Jesus Christ... we do not mean... it is the only teacher of truth."
