D&C 46:13 To some it is given by the Holy Ghost to know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that he was crucified for the sins of the world.
14 To others it is given to believe on their words, that they also might have eternal life if they continue faithful.
I find that an interesting teaching and I ponder if often why different gifts of the spirit are given to different people. But it seems to work that way, and how one person receives revelation does not mean all will receive it the same way. It takes faith.
You could take it a step further. Note how it's not presented as an either, or proposition. It doesn't say to some it is given by the holy ghost to know that Jesus is the son of god, to all others it is given to believe on their words. There may be people that are given both, there may be people that are given neither.
We must all live in the real world... and sometimes that world can be pretty grim. But it is the dream... the hope... that makes the reality worth living.

Yes, nibbler...brilliant! Thanks for making that clarification. I agree with you.
Luke: "Why didn't you tell me? You told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father."
Obi-Wan: "Your father... was seduced by the dark side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true... from a certain point of view."
Luke: "A certain point of view?"
Obi-Wan: "Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to...depend greatly on our point of view."

In the absence of knowledge or faith there is always hope.

Once there was a gentile...who came before Hillel. He said "Convert me on the condition that you teach me the whole Torah while I stand on one foot." Hillel converted him, saying: That which is despicable to you, do not do to your fellow, this is the whole Torah, and the rest is commentary, go and learn it."
