I want to hear Jesus not Joseph!!!

Post by angel333 » 11 Feb 2020, 03:22

Ok a couple weeks ago I posted that after being gone a few years from church decided to go back. I have breast cancer and I am very scared. My first week the talks were about Temple recommend questions. Last week the talks were about the restoration and Joseph Smith. I never realized how much the church doesn't talk about Jesus. I don't know if I can keep this up no matter how much I want to believe. I need to hear Jesus love for me. Where am I going to find it?

This is often location specific, but that's not to say it's not a widespread issue in the church. Some wards/stakes are much better (or much worse) than others. Our ward, and our stake in general, isn't bad and talks are mostly Christ centered in my ward.

I have a couple possible answers.

1) You could try another ward (even within a stake some are much better than others and it is influenced by leadership). You could try another church. I can't think of a time when I have attended another church (Protestant or Catholic) where Christ was not the prominent element of the worship service.

2) Having missed church for a few years you might have missed the "home centered, church supported" effort. Clearly you don't feel the church support part of that (understandably, and I've been there too). If the church isn't supporting your gospel efforts, you need to relay more heavily on the home centered part. The Spirit is not only present at church (many times I don't feel it there at all). You don't need the church (or anyone else) to teach you about Jesus, you have everything you need at home. I would suggest a study (as opposed to a reading) of the four gospels. It worked for me. I don't know you very well, but maybe the Book of Mormon works for you because it works for some people.

Lastly, I have sat through many sacrament talks where I am not uplifted or edified. The emphasis is on sat. I'll use this past Sunday as an example, and the caveat is that the talks were not horrible and they were fairly Christ centered - the speakers themselves just weren't all that great on delivery. Out comes the tablet. This Sunday I reread a couple of my favorite GC talks. Some Sundays I catch the topic and "write" (in my head) my own sermon. Other Sundays I research whatever topic I'm interested in at the moment (I like to do my gospel study by topic as opposed to going through a book). Some Sundays I'm just not into it at all and look at other stuff (no, not porn, and it's blocked anyway). I recently had one of those days and researched some birds that had visited my feeder. I do find some meaning in the sacrament and I do manage to focus during that part. FWIW, and this is just me, I always read from the last few chapters of one of the four gospels during the sacrament, staring with the Last Supper and ending with the resurrection. Second hour is generally a free for all for me, I look at whatever I want (again, not porn). I am usually disengaged second hour.
In the absence of knowledge or faith there is always hope.

Once there was a gentile...who came before Hillel. He said "Convert me on the condition that you teach me the whole Torah while I stand on one foot." Hillel converted him, saying: That which is despicable to you, do not do to your fellow, this is the whole Torah, and the rest is commentary, go and learn it."

We might be hearing more about Joseph than usual this year because of the special anniversary year. Sorry about that.

I do agree about visiting another church's worship service. Some even have evening services that you could attend and still not miss your LDS ward. Different churches offer different things. Our church does less well on the "Jesus saves, Jesus redeems, Jesus heals" part. I speak of visiting other churches as supplementing my spirituality. I do not expect to get all my spiritual needs taken care of in one place.

I also second the recommendation to read the Gospels and the BoM. The BoM is incredibly Christ centered.

Hey Roy thanks , I had thought about the idea of visiting the Catholic church because I really like the current pope. I dismissed the idea as a little to crazy but maybe it does make sense at least to me. I could attend Wed. Night mass and my LDS branch on sun. It can only help I think.

For me, especially this time of year, I attend Lenten services. I skipped Ash Wednesday this year due to a sore back. But I plan to attend all the mid week Lenten Services. My friend from the Lutheran Church I serve at, is reading me the daily devotion passages.

I attend Mormon church for other reasons. It's culturally my home church. Like it or not, I know it inside and out. The pieces I like I try to promote, whether in word, deed, or in my heart. On Sundays I always take my own literature. I own a Kindle reader and it's super easy to get through the Sacrament portion (which I love) and then crack up my reader. Sometimes I am reading an LDS author. Other times some other spiritual book. If you look around, plenty of people are scrolling on their phones. I just keep to myself. If I talk or testimony touches me, I listen. That way I am nourished.

A part of our worship that I cherish is our hymns. Yes we sing them like funeral dirges, but they are the songs of my childhood & youth. Many of our hymns are Methodist based. I don't get to sing those anywhere else.

Maybe you can try some of those things. I do understand your plight. Especially this year, at this time, with General Conference being the Bi-Centennial of the Restoration. We are going to have to muddle through a bit harder this season.

"I am coming to envision a new persona for the Church as humble followers of Jesus Christ....Joseph and his early followers came forth with lots of triumphalist rhetoric, but I think we need a new voice, one of humility, friendship and service. We should teach people to believe in God because it will soften their hearts and make them more willing to serve." - Richard Bushman
