This is wonderful news. Truly wonderful news.
I see through my glass, darkly - as I play my saxophone in harmony with the other instruments in God's orchestra. (h/t Elder Joseph Wirthlin)

Even if people view many things differently, the core Gospel principles (LOVE; belief in the unseen but hoped; self-reflective change; symbolic cleansing; striving to recognize the will of the divine; never giving up) are universal.

I can see how Uchtdorf is "uniquely qualified" to lead Europe since he is a European.

I wonder about one thing though. For those who think Uchtdorf was "too progressive," if Nelson had a concern about that, would he put Uchtdorf in charge of Correlation? I've heard rumors that the Brethren were upset about Uchtdorf's talk admitted that leaders can be wrong sometimes. My question is this: for those who think Nelson doesn't like to be questioned, why put Uchtdorf in charge of Correlation if he is likely to spread progressivism into the curriculum? If Nelson is trying to lesson Uchtdorf's influence, is putting him in charge of correlation the answer to that concern or is it overblown?

I assume correlation isn't easy to change. Over here we imagine manuals being overhauled, etc. I don't picture that happening. I think his job will be to just make sure the standard stuff gets printed. He is warm, popular, easy going. They just want him to be down the hall, that's all. Or in Europe.

I am happy to be wrong on this. But it would take an earthquake to change correlation.

"I am coming to envision a new persona for the Church as humble followers of Jesus Christ....Joseph and his early followers came forth with lots of triumphalist rhetoric, but I think we need a new voice, one of humility, friendship and service. We should teach people to believe in God because it will soften their hearts and make them more willing to serve." - Richard Bushman

I wondered this as well. When the prophet gives a talk in general conference, does he have to run it past the correlation department for approval? If so, why?

Does the tail wag the dog?

Would an apostle correlate the correlation department or be correlated by the correlation department?

Time will tell. Besides, how would I know if they changed the tone... after reading the new Sunday School manuals they put out for adults.

I'm pretty sure the computer that they use to make new Sunday School material for adults wasn't updated to be Y2K compliant. The computer died 17+ years ago.

Correlation: When I taught gospel principles about 10 years ago they replaced the manual. There were some slight textual changes but the vast majority of the changes were to the footnotes. Every quote from BY that used to refer to Journal or Discourses or Discourses of Brigham Young where then changed to refer to Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young. The reason that was given for this was to allow the average member to have a complete and correlated gospel library.
I can't help but see the added benefit of adding yet another layer of filters on the actual words of BY. BY died in 1877. Discourses of Brigham Young was published in 1925 and had an opportunity to correlate and round off all the hard edges of his speeches and doctrines. Then in 1997 the book Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young is published that is even more selective and seems to be cherry picking BY's words. An obvious example is to never give a hint to BY's fervent belief in, practice of, or defense of polygamy. Then a few years later an update to the Gospel Principles manual happens and all the footnotes refer to the newest TOTPOTC:BY - adding yet another layer of correlation on BY and another barrier to trying to understand these Prophets as flawed men living in the context of their historical environment.

I had another thought regarding this announcement. Usually we don't know who is who among the Q12. They each have assignments such as correlation and public relations but it's generally almost secret as to who has which assignment. From that point of view, making an announcement such as this is a step toward more openness. Why should it be a secret which apostle is head of PR? (Last I knew it was DTC.) I am left wondering what influence DFU himself had on this announcement.
In the absence of knowledge or faith there is always hope.

Once there was a gentile...who came before Hillel. He said "Convert me on the condition that you teach me the whole Torah while I stand on one foot." Hillel converted him, saying: That which is despicable to you, do not do to your fellow, this is the whole Torah, and the rest is commentary, go and learn it."
