Dieter Update

Post by mom3 » 22 Jan 2018, 22:48

In my grief I find myself obsessing over him. Fandom is killing me.

I am mixed about this news. One half of me is screaming, "They sent him to Siberia". The other is "Well at least he and Kearon get to work together. Maybe I should move to Europe? Maybe hunt them down and offer to serve side by side." Clearly I am losing it.

"I am coming to envision a new persona for the Church as humble followers of Jesus Christ....Joseph and his early followers came forth with lots of triumphalist rhetoric, but I think we need a new voice, one of humility, friendship and service. We should teach people to believe in God because it will soften their hearts and make them more willing to serve." - Richard Bushman

DFU probably just wants to get away from his more orthodox brethren. He can probably go months at a time without seeing them if he lives in Europe.

I am with you Roadrunner. The man is probably joyfully packing and heading home.

Wasn't he one of the leaders behind the essays? If I'm remembering that right, it could be great that he's in charge of correlation.

When all's said and done, youthwork is one of the best things they could have demoted him to.
DASH1730 "An Area Authority...[was] asked...who...would go to the Telestial kingdom. His answer: "murderers, adulterers and a lot of surprised Mormons!"'
1ST PRES 1978 "[LDS] believe...there is truth in many religions and philosophies...good and great religious leaders... have raised the spiritual, moral, and ethical awareness of their people. When we speak of The [LDS] as the only true church...it is...authorized to administer the ordinances...by Jesus Christ... we do not mean... it is the only teacher of truth."

Agreed. It is definitely where you can make a difference, regardless of church doctrines and creeds.
Luke: "Why didn't you tell me? You told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father."
Obi-Wan: "Your father... was seduced by the dark side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true... from a certain point of view."
Luke: "A certain point of view?"
Obi-Wan: "Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to...depend greatly on our point of view."

I agree amount making the difference. The "head missionary" is a very high profile job, just vacated by Oaks. I see this as very good for Uchtdorf and us. And he's the boss of correlation - another biggie. I couldn't think of a better person for that job - very influential in what's taught.

FWIW, overseeing Europe doesn't necessarily mean living there. Many of them have assignments to oversee areas (each area of the world has an apostle overseeing it), it's just an apostle assignment.
In the absence of knowledge or faith there is always hope.

Once there was a gentile...who came before Hillel. He said "Convert me on the condition that you teach me the whole Torah while I stand on one foot." Hillel converted him, saying: That which is despicable to you, do not do to your fellow, this is the whole Torah, and the rest is commentary, go and learn it."

Hi DJ,
Yes, I agree - but if he wanted to live in Europe he could. Oaks lived in the Philippines with his wife from 2002 to 2004 when he oversaw that area.

I'd be all "hey I want to preside over the South Pacific. You can find me correlating in Tahiti."

 I think the South Pacific area folks tend to live in Australia or New Zealand, which wouldn't be bad either, especially considering that they travel to the other places frequently.

As I recall, I think it was Nelson who lived in Chile for awhile when he oversaw that area and there was a huge concern about activity/retention there. That concern still exists. I think the only thing we'd have to worry about with DFU living is Europe is what they might do in his absence. Legend has it that some key apostles were on assignment overseas when the priesthood revelation came.

I was thinking about the Correlation Dept. this morning. It would be way cool if he could lift it slightly off the floor of the abyss it sits on right now.

I could see him dividing his time between 2 continents. I mean he can fly himself where ever he likes. :).
