StayLDS reference center

Post by mom3 » 21 Apr 2015, 16:05

We have a running thread with Useful Quotes of the Day. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4042

In the spirit of that thread I would like to start a Reference Center Thread.

The guidelines will be much the same as the Quotes thread.

* This will be a place with easily accessible resources for us.

*As you come across talks and articles that you wish to add, please consider the source and attach it if possible. Please try to keep the material close to LDS reliable sources, i.e. church magazines, conference addresses, and LDS.org type materials.

My hope is to build a data center for our work among our LDS friends and families.

My hats off to Mackay11 for starting the Quote of the Day Thread.

"I am coming to envision a new persona for the Church as humble followers of Jesus Christ....Joseph and his early followers came forth with lots of triumphalist rhetoric, but I think we need a new voice, one of humility, friendship and service. We should teach people to believe in God because it will soften their hearts and make them more willing to serve." - Richard Bushman

The Gospel Topic Essays.

Beginning late 2013 and running through 2014, the church published 11 clarifying essays for the Gospel Topic section of it's website. We are encouraged to learn from them, instruct from them, and share them.

Luke: "Why didn't you tell me? You told me Vader betrayed and murdered my father."
Obi-Wan: "Your father... was seduced by the dark side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed. So what I told you was true... from a certain point of view."
Luke: "A certain point of view?"
Obi-Wan: "Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to...depend greatly on our point of view."

Plural Marriage in Kirtland and Nauvoo: https://www.lds.org/topics/plural-marri ... o?lang=eng
In the absence of knowledge or faith there is always hope.

Once there was a gentile...who came before Hillel. He said "Convert me on the condition that you teach me the whole Torah while I stand on one foot." Hillel converted him, saying: That which is despicable to you, do not do to your fellow, this is the whole Torah, and the rest is commentary, go and learn it."

We have various Proclamations and First Presidency statements that people refer to. One of my favorite is an oft forgotten Official Statement by the First Presidency. I tried to locate it in Proclamation format, no luck. I did find it in the following think. Enjoy.

God's Love For All Mankind

___________________________________

The First Presidency (Spencer W. Kimball, N. Eldon Tanner, Marion G. Romney)

Based upon ancient and modern revelation, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gladly teaches and declares the Christian doctrine that all men and women are brothers and sisters, not only by blood relationship from common mortal progenitors but as literal spirit children of an Eternal Father.

The great religious leaders of the world such as Mohammed, Confucius, and the Reformers, as well as philosophers including Socrates, Plato, and others, received a portion of God's light. Moral truths were given to them by God to enlighten whole nations and to bring a higher level of understanding to individuals.

The Hebrew prophets prepared the way for the coming of Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah, who should provide salvation for all mankind who believe in the gospel.

Consistent with these truths, we believe that God has given and will give to all peoples sufficient knowledge to help them on their way to eternal salvation, either in this life or in the life to come.

We also declare that the gospel of Jesus Christ, restored to His Church in our day, provides the only way to a mortal life of happiness and a fullness of joy forever. For those who have not received this gospel, the opportunity will come to them in the life hereafter if not in this life.

Our message therefore is one of special love and concern for the eternal welfare of all men and women, regardless of religious belief, race, or nationality, knowing that we are truly brothers and sisters because we are sons and daughters of the same Eternal Father. (“God’s Love for All Mankind,” First Presidency Statement, Feb. 15, 1978; emphasis added)
Below it is a reference to this Statement by President James E. Faust of the First Presidency under President Gordon B. Hinckley.
President James E. Faust (1920-2007)

Why does the Church grow and flourish? It does so because of divine direction to the leaders and members. This began in our day when God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith early in the spring of 1820. However, we claim that God’s inspiration is not limited to the Latter-day Saints. The First Presidency has stated: “The great religious leaders of the world such as Mohammed, Confucius, and the Reformers, as well as philosophers including Socrates, Plato, and others, received a portion of God’s light. Moral truths were given to them by God to enlighten whole nations and to bring a higher level of understanding to individuals. … We believe that God has given and will give to all peoples sufficient knowledge to help them on their way to eternal salvation” (“Statement of the First Presidency regarding God’s Love for All Mankind,” 15 Feb. 1978). Church magazines are a great reference point. If you can find a talk or article that represents a specific gospel area you support, it is fair game in talks, class discussion and lessons. I will add one for a starter, feel free to add ones you have enjoyed.

This is a brief "based on true events" retelling of a primary girls experience visiting a Cathedral and the lessons she learned about God loving all of his children.
