New book: Secular Faith

Post by Minyan Man »

I'm in the process of reading a new book by Mark A Smith titled: "Secular Faith"
"How Culture has trumped Religion in American Politics".

Even though the emphasis is on American Politics it also reflects how culture changes religious beliefs over time.
It is very interesting so far. For example, he talks about in earlier times it was considered sinful to collect interest on
financial transactions. You could be deprived a "christian burial" if you did it. Or, how slavery was considered acceptable
under certain circumstances for example foreign captives. He addresses the following topics:
Slavery
Divorce
Homosexuality
Abortion
Women's Rights
Religion, Politics and Morality

He doesn't seem to attack or challenge religious beliefs or organizations.
He does seem to observe over time the changes that occur.

I'm not very far along. This book & topic seems appropriate for the time we currently live in.
