Re: Home Teaching is Over, Long Live Home Teaching?

Anyway, what does "ministering" mean to you? My idea of ministering is very broad, does not depend on monthly or even regular visits, and it depends largely on the minister and the person being ministered to (and those two aren't mutually exclusive). Ministering to the "widow" who is old, lonely an...

Re: Home Teaching is Over, Long Live Home Teaching?

SD, I think often the need is just to have someone you can relax with for a few minutes. That's all part of the relationship/trust thing to some extent. I look forward to inviting my ministering elder (actually they're a couple, our ward has done this for awhile) over to dinner and just chatting - n...

Free agency vs. free agency

How is that for a title? Here's the story: My son was telling me about his stake conference and that he liked the SPs talk about free agency. Essentially the SP asserted that agency is not free. As my son continued to relate things about the talk I realized that the SP was using a different definiti...

Re: Home Teaching is Over, Long Live Home Teaching!

From the FP letter: Ministering is Christlike caring for others and helping meet their spiritual and temporal needs. Pretty clear to me, but in my experience with some no amount of training will help them understand that very simple statement. It's a simple statement but I think the challenge is th...

Re: Are we a church of volunteers, assignments or covenants?

I suppose it depends on who you ask. My own view of covenants is probably quite different from the mainstream view. I personally believe we are an organization of volunteers. But it is easier to guilt people if they think they're breaking covenants.

Re: What is the purpose of the ministering program?

I think that's pretty much it, SD. I don't think it's significantly changed in scope. I do think the job of the EQP and RSP has changed a bit to take much of the "welfare" load from the bishop, but arguably it should have been that way all along. The Elders Quorum Moving Company did come up in PH ye...

Re: Home Teaching is Over, Long Live Home Teaching!

I think the purpose of it needs to be spelled out more clearly too -- anyone seen the purpose clearly stated? From the FP letter: Ministering is Christlike caring for others and helping meet their spiritual and temporal needs. Pretty clear to me, but in my experience with some no amount of training...

Re: Filled With Charity Even When Not Living Church Commandments

I have had a similar experience as well. More than once actually. I am reminded that when Joseph Smith went to the grove to pray his main goal was to ask for forgiveness (made very clear if you read all four main accounts). I'm with others who say count it as blessing or a tender mercy and go with i...

Re: Home Teaching is Over, Long Live Home Teaching!

I think my ward, and stake actually, are much like Curt's. Our discussion have been pretty good. We talked about a more holistic view today - taking care of more than just physical or spiritual needs but social/psychological needs. IN a nutshell, just plain being friends.Visits were not mentioned on...

Thanks for sharing, Mom (and Hawk). I've shared it with a couple people I think might benefit from it.
