Re: Jesus and the Temple

Jesus obeyed the law of Moses. Jesus fulfilled the law of Moses. Jesus worked under the construct of the temple. Jesus fulfilled the purpose of the temple; symbolized by the tearing of the veil, the thing that divided man from god's presence. We write our own stories. I absolutely agree. I think th...

Jesus and the Temple

I've been listening to Richard Rohr's Sermon on the Mount. I would recommend it. The idea that comes across again and again with almost all the New Testament scholarship I've encountered is this: Jesus was radical and was set on disrupting the political and religious power structures of the time. Th...

A Healthier Approach to the Porn Dilemma

I think we have framed the pornography discussion in a way that creates a lot of disappointment for everyone in the church. This is again at the mercy of the leadership roulette and the approach and penalties vary with different bishops and stake presidents. By treating any viewing of pornography as...

Re: Name of The Church - Version 152

I agree with the other comments here. I think this really cheapens the idea of revelation. With all that is going on right now, why would God take a firm stand on this issue? Especially when we've been here before and it has not worked.

Re: Harm vs. Purity

Love this post. If you have read Marcus Borg’s Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time” he does a great job of talking about how 1st century Judaism was a purity system and how Jesus disrupted the whole idea of a purity system (he disregarded table coustoms, interacted with the impure, etc). Our whol...

Sacred Myth and Truth Claims

I read this quote on a thread John Dehlin posted about the Church essay on the Moroni/Nephi dilemma (Church essay is here https://www.lds.org/languages/eng/content/history/topics/angel-moroni, critical argument is that this is evidence that key details of Joseph's story changed over time). This is t...

TR Interview Grilling

So, I went in to renew my TR a while ago and the Stake President saw it as an opportunity to ask all kinds of peripheral questions. I didn't feel like I could say that they were none of his business and just kind of made it through the interview, but in hindsight it makes me mad. Our stake has a thi...

Re: The Lord's Name

I came across this excellent post which makes some great points https://credohouse.org/blog/taking-the-lords-name-in-vain-what-does-it-really-mean. God is not God's name. It's a placeholder or title, like calling someone a person. This commandment is about more than just the proper name for God as a...
