Face Palm Sunday . . .

We had stake conference on Easter Sunday. I put out an informal poll on social media and most people had an Easter-themed program, some had a different program that acknowledged Easter and some ignored it altogether. A fair number of people (in different areas, not all the same stake), had stake con...

Re: Good Men (and Women) Better . . .

I like the mindset idea. I recently heard a sermon putting the whole idea of the Last Supper in terms of celebrating Passover, which is commemorating the liberation of the Hebrew slaves. The point of the sermon was that the idea of the sacrament and a major theme of Christ is liberation. I like that...

Good Men (and Women) Better . . .

I'm still trying to process Pres. Nelson's conference talk. I watched a lot of Jonathon Streeter's rebuttal/analysis on Thoughts on Things and Stuff and formulating my own views on it. One interesting point raised, that I've seen discussed elsewhere is the idea raised in D&C 19 that many critics bel...

Conference Reactions

The 189th Annual General Conference was kind of a mixed bag for me. I love the traditions, getting together with family and being with my family for the Priesthood Session. I love feeling like part of the group and was really happy the November 2015 policy changed. There were a few talks I enjoyed, ...

Re: Church to allow baptisms, blessings for children of LGBT parents, updates handbook regarding 'apostasy'

Very happy about the announcement as well. It's been interesting to see that it really highlighted some cognitive dissonance for very orthodox members of my family. I wonder if it will highlight prophetic fallibility for a lot of people who had not considered it before. The implications for this are...

Re: Atonement

I think the BOM and D&C are pretty clear that some form of substitution/ransom theory is a central doctrine. But there have been different interpretations and iterations of this over time. I think, by and large, most Church members still subscribe to the anti-Universalist sentiment of Joseph Smith's...

Re: Atonement

Good to hear that I'm not the only one who views things that way. I probably did not articulate my views well, but I've tried to explain this view of the atonement and had some people get extremely offended and think I was some kind of anti-Christ and denying the divinity of Jesus.

Atonement

I've found that one of the most sure ways to make traditional believers uncomfortable and upset is to bring up alternative views of the atonement. For me, the atonement has made sense on paper, but never really resonated with me. Last year, I was sitting in a youth fireside where they showed this fi...

Re: Conservatism and Control vs. Autonomy and Respect

The control part is one of the hardest parts of the Church for me as well. I also hate how many talks there are in GC about becoming a disciple, which is defined as totally giving up your self and allowing the Church to control you 100% (becoming Church broke). I don't think that's what Jesus meant ...

Re: Pros and Cons of Supplementing

I think that is a fair point about a pastor wanting to keep people coming and generating revenue. But, I think the same argument could be made with us, that our leaders at the local level are trying to keep the people above them happy (stake presidents, area authorities, seventies) and that the peop...
