Re: Birthday Celebration

Katzpur, you raise a good point. Now that you mention it, I remember the celebration for President Hinckley and I had similar feelings then. I'm not sure if it's that I don't jive as much with President Nelson's personality or if since my faith has changed, I'm much more aware of the problem of lead...

Re: Could it be . . . Satan?

Great discussion. I think the Satan idea can be a good motivator and would only cause harm in people not taking responsibility for actions or blaming decisions by others (like the decision to leave the Church) on them being totally influenced by Satan.

Birthday Celebration

I had a really hard time with the birthday gala for President Nelson that took place on Friday. While I don't always agree with him, I think he's done some great things and is an amazing man. He's made a lot of good changes and I think that his desire to keep learning and doing new things is admirab...

Could it be . . . Satan?

So, upfront, part of my faith deconstruction involved abandoning the idea of a literal Satan. I see the idea as an archetype of human evil, but do not believe in a literal devil (I think that humans can be evil enough on their own without having Satan tempt us). In Sunday School I was thinking: "Can...

Re: Are we the church of the WoW?

Katzpur, I wholeheartedly agree on all counts. I love this quote by Richard Rohr and think it is very applicable to the hard line we've taken on this issue: “If change and growth are not programmed into your spirituality, if there are not serious warnings about the blinding nature of fear and fanati...

Re: Are we the church of the WoW?

The recent WOW stuff is also a demonstration of the huge generational gap that exists. I wonder how much the leadership is thinking along these lines "the young people are drinking green tea and blended coffee drinks, there must be some confusion out there about whether these are against the WOW." T...

Re: Are we the church of the WoW?

I really don't like this move, I feel like it took what were a few gray areas with tea and coffee and made the most conservative stance the new rule. I think this is going to cause some cognitive dissonance with people (younger people) who see tea as a health drink and can't help see the hypocrisy o...

Re: Can We Talk about The Atonement?

Also, I delved into this a few years ago and found answers that I thought helped me understand it in a way that worked for me in Richard Rohr and a book called Meeting Jesus Again for the Very First Time by Marcus Borg (he has a great chapter on the atonement as well that points to some of the flaws...

Re: Can We Talk about The Atonement?

The atonement has never made sense to me either. The point was really driven home in a recent stake youth fireside when they showed the classic movie the mediator https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media-library/video/2007-01-0005-the-mediator?lang=eng. The hard-nosed businessman who needs the cont...

Re: Another TR and Garment Issue/Question

1. You never made a covenant in the temple to wear your garments; 2. You were instructed to "wear it throughout your life" which gives you a lot of personal latitude in deciding how you do that; 3. If this is an area that is up to personal interpretation (and I believe it is) why in the world are we...
