Re: The Church Purge of the Latter Days

I can't remember the last time there was an actual discussion in any of my classes about the 2nd coming. It seems so de-emphasized that it's actually something I haven't thought about in my deconstruction process of the past few years. I'm actually stunned by this. Maybe my head is in the sand. I wo...

Re: How is the new ministering program going?

I was a horrible HT. I am a great "minister." IF that means that engage my assigned people when I see them and offer support and love when I can. Shoot them a text when I notice their rain gutter is plugged, etc. Of course I also do these kinds of things for people I'm not specifically assigned to. ...

Re: Atonement

From Richard Rohr: Historically we moved from human sacrifice to animal sacrifice to various modes of seeming self-sacrifice, usually involving the body. For many religions, including immature Christianity, God was distant and scary, an angry deity who must be placated. God was not someone with who...

Re: Atonement

https://lehislibrary.wordpress.com/2011/02/03/cleon-skousens-intelligence-theory-of-atonement/ One interesting thing that I remember from the document was that it was presented that there were clues scattered through the scriptures about this "doctrine" and you had to find the clues and piece them ...

Re: Atonement

Maybe a year ago, the SS instructor asked the question "How does the atonement work?" I responded by saying that Clean Skousen had a theory that is essentially the penal substitution theory but with the intelligences of the universe demanding punishment for breaches of moral law rather than God him...

Re: Saving Ordinances

I'm trying to let go of the literalism of scripture. It's interesting that this has been easier for me to do this with the bible, than it is for the BoM. Perhaps because I have been taught since birth that the bible was fallible but the BoM was the literal word of god via a direct link from JC/God t...

Re: Small Moment of Courage

I raised my hand and pointed out that in the case of Job - his faith was just to hold on even though his friends didn't get it and he didn't see a specific reason for what he felt that God had done. I reemphasized that sometimes for us, the best we can do is what Job did and hold on in the face of ...

Re: Was Nephi a real person?

In short, I do not believe Nephi was a real person. But that's ok, I always related better to Lemuel. But I don't think he's a real person either. One of the things I have had to let go of this past year was my literal belief in the scriptures. All scriptures. That does not mean that I find them use...

Re: Shrinking wards due to boundary changes?

I'll be able to weigh in on this in about six months after our stake completes it's long-rumored reorganization. It's being kept very hush-hush as people in my area take their ward association VERY seriously. I'm currently in the lowest population ward, and I would say we are health. I don't anticip...
