Talk: Finding the Gospel of Hope

Here's the talk I gave in sacrament meeting today. It ended up almost about grace, but more about the difference between the gospel of works and gospel of grace, and using "gospel of duty" and "gospel of hope" to describe them. If I had given this talk before my FC, I would have been less pointed ab...

Re: Bible Dictionary not doctrine

To bring the discussion back around to the Bible Dictionary: I find what it says about Pharisees to track very well with how I was raised, and describe nicely what I see in a certain kind of Mormon. They prided themselves on their strict observance of the law and on the care with which they avoided ...

Re: Bible Dictionary not doctrine

Looks like a minor thread-jack. Sorry! :D I would love, love, love to give a talk on grace. I know, right? I totally lucked out. My assigned topic is faith, but I was given explicit permission to talk about any adjacent subject I feel strongly about. Based on my recent reinvestigation into the Churc...

Re: Bible Dictionary not doctrine

I'm going to start my talk on Sunday with, "After the straitest sect of our religion I was raised a Pharisee." Should be fun.

The topic is grace. :D

Re: Charles Taylor: A Secular Age

Thoroughly enjoying it so far. I got to here before feeling I really needed to comment: This way of living is foreign to us in our day. We can’t comprehend the lived experience in which a single religious worldview was so fully enmeshed in society that there really was no alternative available or ev...

Re: Admitting Mistakes

I had an epiphany about this the other day, which might explain every issue I have with Church leadership: they don't trust us to come to the right conclusions . It explains the buried history, secret temple covenants, closed finances, coercive policies, undisclosed rationale, lack of admitting spec...

Request for faith crisis analogies

Two months in, I'm starting to move from faith crisis to faith transition, but I still feel a need to make sense of what happened. I find that, for me, a good way to do this is to find ways to explain it to others, even if I never will. It's not really possible to explain a Mormon faith crisis liter...

Re: Church apology

Self-quote: It seems to follow the same script my parents did: maintain authority by maintaining the appearance of infallibility. After mentally reviewing my own leadership experience, I've got more possible explanations. As HPGL, I had the "opportunity" to make a difficult home teaching assignment....

Re: 30-minute rule... a sign of lowering income?

Other possibilities: - The church wants to avoid Moyle-like development excesses, at least with tithing funds, so it's acting conservatively. - It's just another way to cut costs, on principle. - It's meant as a stop-gap while the church adjusts to having smaller units (which I've heard rumors of).

Re: Church apology

Elder Oaks is on record as saying the church neither seeks nor gives apologies. He's very close to correct. I've looked, and haven't found anything more than what nibbler posted. The church doesn't repent. This is one of my biggest complaints. It seems to follow the same script my parents did: maint...
