- I disagree about drugs with him given how many are destroyed by them -
He did drink and womanize quite a lot... it wasn't very Buddhist of him. But he did have quite a few incredible insights, and was very skilled at teaching. I guess a tree can bare good fruit and bad.

Re: Alan Watts

I really like these concepts. They get me thinking and broaden my perspectives. On the surface these are easily chocked off as new age mumbo jumbo, but the effect of thinking about the afterlife/current existence without the constraints of dogma is lifting to the soul. It might seem new age, but it...

Re: An Afterlife?

I heard a lecture by Alan Watts, a 60s new age philosopher, on the nature of god. He proposed that God pushed a 'random existence generator button', and here we are; living this existence, all of us gods who don't remember pushing the button. Alan Watts was quite a guy! I hadn't heard that particul...

Re: Is belief a choice? Also, seriously? No really, seriously?

When is it enough hurt from religions having their freedom of belief? When is the policy necessary to defend? What is hurt by changing the policy? I detest the hurt caused by religious beliefs as much as anyone. The trouble is, in rejecting any particular religious dogma, you take on another; and a...

Re: Is belief a choice? Also, seriously? No really, seriously?

I really don't want this to turn political (not the mission of the site and all that) but the USA has the first amendment, it also has a Christian majority. I'm probably wrong but the USA feels like it is moving closer to becoming a theocracy. I'm just not seeing people losing their religious freed...

Re: Is belief a choice? Also, seriously? No really, seriously?

Back to the title question, "Is belief a choice?" Like with just about everything (including sexuality/gender identity), religious beliefs a combination of nature/nurture, and a *little* bit of choice (if any), in varying degrees from person to person. I'd reckon none of us would believe in Jehovah,...

Re: Does Programmed Service Build Community?

IMHO, any gathering can build community, no matter what you are doing. When I think of "Programmed Service" I think of cleaning the chapel, raking the church leaves, or home teaching. Do any of these build community more than the ward Christmas Party? More than Trunk or Treat? More than the three ho...

Re: Another "why people leave" survey

These surveys help me to feel a close connection with those who have gone through similar "faith crises", but as always, the majority of Church leaders are only going to bend the results to fit their current narrative. I don't have much hope any real change will happen. We will still get labelled as...

I know me and there's no way I would have done that without hanging on to some cheat codes.

Re: New hymnal is in the works! Some major, wonderful changes.

I vote for the removal of: -Hymns focused on or praising Joseph Smith -War Hymns -Hymns with deep, unsubstantiated doctrine And replacing them with hymns focused on: -God/Heavenly Father/Christ and our relationship with Them. -Virtues such as humility or gratitude "In Our Lovely Deseret" is a joke h...
