Re: Veiling Women's Faces at Burial

Did we ever really know why there was a veil in place to begin with? Historically, veils have been a symbol of separation from God. Moses' veil, the veil of the temple between between the "holy place" and "holy of holies", etc. In ancient times, it was also used to denote between those women who we...

Re: Veiling Women's Faces at Burial

If the veil is no longer used, why even have it? (As a side note, I don't see that the men's cap serves a purpose either.) The veils are symbolic. Symbols are very difficult to do away with, since they are often left "open for interpretation". Even though we've moved past the original intended mean...

Maybe when we are as old as Catholicism we will be able to have a leader be open like this.
Think of all the scandals we'll have by then! :D

Re: Why Can't the LDS Church be open like this?

For me the difference here is that we claim to have a divine commission -- can we justify ourselves by indicating all organizations do this? That for me is the kicker... The only groups who can make claims of "divine commission" are those who can get away with it (specifically, religions, nations, ...

Re: Cooking with alcohol

Just to keep this short and because I don't have a ton of time at the moment, I interpret the scripture to mean "stay away from all evil" (wherever it appears) as opposed to what seems to be a common church member interpretation of "don't do anything that could appear to be evil." Personally, I val...

Re: Holding Past Actions Against People and Organizations

Back to the OP, should we not hold people accountable to the past actions of those to whom they claim succession (whether legitimate or not). In the example of Christianity, most Christians hold Moses to have been a prophet, and that the law of Moses was from God. Jesus felt he was a prophet. So whi...

Re: Why Can't the LDS Church be open like this?

And adding to Dande's great list - This misconduct is sexual in nature. It's appalling in every way, shape, and form. If it was monetery misuse, or something else, it too might be open to interpretation. We've had sexual misconduct too. And just like the Catholics, the LDS leadership does everythin...

Re: Why Can't the LDS Church be open like this?

One other reason I thought of: The Catholic Church has really lightened up on the required commitment and expectations of its membership. It seems to be a lot easier to be only "half-in" with Catholicism. You can be a "Christmas and Easter" Catholic, pretty easily. There are no "belief requirements"...

Re: Why Can't the LDS Church be open like this?

The part I learn from this is that the "wrongs" have to be widely known and shouted from the rooftops for the establishment to acknowledge them at some level. The truth is, we're small fish. I think most people think of the LDS Church, the way most members of the Church think about the Jehovah's Wi...

Re: Veiling Women's Faces at Burial

I keep hoping eventually they'll stop telling us altogether what to wear when we're dead. I still dread the fact that someone in my family will, against my explicit wishes, bury me in temple clothes. I'm sure someone will think "Well, now that he's on the other side and knows better, surely he will ...
