Re: More than enough

Also, when does service become simply free labor? I see it as a great thing for the poor...but it could quickly become like moving in our church. I'd say "whenever the Church is involved". ButI was talking about the individual fixing their own car, using the Church's garage. It's not "free labor" i...

Re: More than enough

They were talking about making one bay a mechanical shop where the members can come and have other members repair their cars. I'd be absolutely estatic if the Church were to do this!!! Having the right tools and a good garage, can save you thousands of dollars in repairs. And since the poorer among...

Re: More than enough

I had an experience today. I went to one of those mega-Church complexes. Inside, they have a FANTASTIC indoor playground for kids. It was exceptionally well-kept, three stories, two sections. The best thing is, it was absoultely free to the public. You didn't need to be a member, didn't need to pay ...

Re: Thoughts on Forigiveness and Trust in Committed, Long Term Relationships

I guess that my journey has taken me to a place where I don't consider scripture inviolate or the final word. Experience, as well as advice of professionals can influence my interpretation and faith in them. And I've seen atrocities committed in the name of scripture. Wouldn't you say those attroci...

Re: More than enough

...we were barely getting by. Holy cow! It's funny how statements like that often get translated to Church leaders into "black and white" dichotomies. "Barely at Church each Sunday" means active, "Barely on the records" means member, and "Barely surviving" means doing pretty good! I guess, if I hav...

Re: Thoughts on Forigiveness and Trust in Committed, Long Term Relationships

A couple of thoughts I had: -I believe there is a strong difference between trust, forgiveness, and repentance. -I don't believe what people say about God should be taken as a way to live our lives; or at least not without critical assessment. Even in the scriptures given, God's forgiveness of us is...

Re: Thoughts on Forigiveness and Trust in Committed, Long Term Relationships

My conclusion is that in committed relationships, the wrong-doer needs to go through many of the same stages of restoration that God requires of people to forgive them. There must be a change in character. I shared something my wife did 27 years ago in our relationship that really hurt me. She retu...

Re: Ideas for Sacrament Meeting

I always maintain church isn't supposed to be torture. Even if you do think it's true. Paid clergy are no guarantee of better entertainment, trust me. LDS talks are no worse than the sermons in many churches. Well... you either need to offer a good service (i.e. be entertaining, engaging, effective...

Re: More than enough

To be blunt, I think the Church requires tithing these days, not of necessity, but because it increases our commitment to the Church. I'd also say the Church never wants to struggle financially ever again, and has worked hard to get themselves in a position where money will never be an issue. If tim...

Re: Ideas for Sacrament Meeting

It feels like there's an active goal to stifle socializing and developing a community. The experience is overly formal, businesslike. It's hard to connect with others when they've got two kids up on the podium with their arms crossed giving the congregation the stink-eye for talking before the meet...
