Re: "The CES Letter"

Thanks for sharing, LB. I think one of the best transitions I've made in my faith journey, was learning to judge the doctrines by whether they were useful, and not by whether they are true. For many members, the Church narrative works wonderful! It leads to good morals, and happy, fulfilling lives. ...

Re: Island of Misfit Toys

My personal belief, is that everyone is a "misfit". Everyone wants to be "normal", and everyone has a very specific idea of what that means. I believe that what we view as "normal" and what is actually normal are two very different things. We try our best to pretend we're "normal" and well balanced....

Re: Was I really like that? Yes.

The WORST response I have ever had to "coming out" was, "Why don't you just have your name removed from Church records?" And when I explained why, it was used as evidence that deep down I still believed the Church was true.

Re: Can't remember why I'm hurt but I still am!

Fast forward a few years and he seemed to have gone through some humbling experiences. No more of the 'you'll do this because it's your duty' manipulation. Less high and mighty. ... What helped for me was to forgive him for who he is or was. I think there is a lot of wisdom in this. Thank you for s...

I still want to start my own religion. ;)
I've thought about this before. I think if my wife wouldn't be so intensely opposed, I'd open up one of Comte's "Temple for Humanity". We'd have hymns and sacraments, and baptisms, and wonderful sermons... only God wouldn't have much to do with it.

Re: May I have your, Belief-O-Matic, please?

Thanks for resurrecting this thread, Amy! I only took it once. In a few places I felt like my answers needed more in depth definitions and explanations. But it marked me as Jainist, which I thought was very fitting, though now I'm even more upset the Nazi's misused the swastika. 1. Taoism- 91% 2. Ma...

Re: Root of my faith crisis - trust

And FWIW on the 1 step forward, there doesn't appear to be evidence that JS had sex with any of them - but there's no evidence the other way around either. It's pretty hard for me to believe he did not have sex with the mysterious Fanny Alger, and given the circumstances of some of the later ones I...

Re: Everyone will be tried as Abraham...

I've often heard "Everyone will be tried as Abraham" to mean that anyone who will make it to the celestial kingdom, become gods, etc will have to go through all the pain and sufferings Abraham did.''When going through pain and suffering, my wife has a need for empathy. "How would you like it, if I s...

Re: Can't remember why I'm hurt but I still am!

So, how do you get rid of the hum? Spend a little more time in graveyards. I'm dead serious. Puns aside, I've found it theraputic. It helps oreint myself with the right perspective. It helps me to stop worrying or caring about the pettiness of others, and get on with living. The dead don't gossip, ...

Re: Hard to find the right words

I once heard, "One's perspective is their reality". If your wife is very TBM, it's important to approach her with a TBM mindset. If she has goals, like avoiding green tea or attending the temple more often, do everything you can to support her. Stay away from green tea yourself, or offer to drive he...
