Re: Not paying tithing consequences?
We would rather find another place to donate our money where they are open about how they use their finances. We aren't really concerned about not receiving blessings. Sorry if my original post made it seem like I was worried about not receiving blessings. We just don't really believe that blessings...

Re: Not paying tithing consequences?
The problem with just avoiding tithing settlement is he wouldn't be able to do that. Last year, we were super busy and didn't sign up for tithing settlement and the bishop pulled me out of sunday school and surprised me with tithing settlement. So I have a feeling my husband wouldn't be able to avoi...

Not paying tithing consequences?
My husband would probably be considered a NOM (New Order Mormon, or a more nuanced believer who is trying to help the church for the better). He is highly considering paying no more tithing because he doesn't feel he can trust the church with our money. I'm totally on board with that. The problem is...

Re: Think our membership is exaggerated?
A while ago I looked into Tonga since the church talks about how many members they have over there. According to this, http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/facts-and-statistics/country/tonga Their membership numbers show 64,156 members in Tonga. There's no date given for this info. According to this websit...

Re: Giving a talk, need some advice
I love everyone else's ideas! I think this will be a great talk! To make it into the inclusive talk that you're wanting, you could turn all these previous ideas and turn it toward the idea that "even if you have different views that most people at church, it's good that you're here, so we can have d...

Re: "You Lost Me"
You lost me at: - Prop 8. When I participated in the Yes on 8 movement in California, I felt very powerful. But as I matured, and the more I thought about it, the more it bothered me. The idea of taking away agency in something that didn't hurt others just felt so so wrong. - being secretive about f...

Really well done article
An article LDS Living recently came out with is very reassuring. I hope many leaders read it and learn new tactics to help those who doubt. It's worth it to click on the link at the bottom of the article to read the full article, because they really did a good job! http://www.ldsliving.com/Being-an-...

Re: BYU Psych prof addresses faith crisis at Ed Week
@dande I agree. While some things are part of the culture and aren't necessarily doctrine, some things that aren't doctrine are taught or not addressed by the brethren. For example, the idea that young men HAVE to go on a mission is a cultural one, however, the brethren push this one. Also, there ar...

Re: Miracles and the Availability Heuristic
I was just thinking a few days ago about how often miracles and visions happened in Joseph Smith's time and I was realizing that maybe part of the reason was they expected them and were looking for them. Joseph had a lot of visions and revelations, but other people had them too. It made me think how...

Re: James Hamula, First Quorum of the Seventy, Excommunicated
Something odd I noticed with this whole thing is that people are saying the church wouldn't announce why he was excommunicated. The problem with that is, they've done that before. When George P. Lee was excommunicated, it was immediately in Deseret News and they told their readers why. They didn't s...
