Re: Bullying - Stop It more relevant than ever

Bullying is "natural" - and it needs to be understood better and addressed more comprehensively. This makes me realize, there needs to be a bit more to utchdorf's advice. To those who wish to bully, stop it. To those who witness bullying, love the bully. No one is born with a desire to murder, stea...

Re: It is God's Will

I believe that it can be intensely comforting when things go terribly wrong to believe that God is in control and that He must have a very specific purpose for things happening that way and that you will one day understand and rejoice in God's wisdom. I understand what you're saying Roy. I also thi...

Re: An Unemotional Analysis of the Recent "Whistleblower" on LDS Church Finances

it just seems a little hypocritical to me. The leaders teach to pay tithing above all else and rely on the lord to provide. To exercise faith that you will be taken care of. But sitting on a hoard of money seems opposite of that. If the leaders lived by faith they would funnel that money back into ...

Re: An Unemotional Analysis of the Recent "Whistleblower" on LDS Church Finances

...especially comments like "if you don't have money for food, pay your tithing." That feels to me like forcing lower-income people to be dependent upon the church. If you pay tithing THEN we will give you food from the bishop's storehouse. Piggybacking on this. I don't think having a rainy day fun...

Which excuse is usually more valid?

I was browsing another forum and reading stories from inactive and ex-members who were involved with emergency services and the temple. Most of these stories involved EMS or PD trying to get past the front desk, only to be denied by the temple president or other worker because of lack of recommend. ...

Re: Interesting Conversation the other day...

Setting high standards with no safety net is great for some. It might help them to achieve more than they would be able to do otherwise - knowing that quitting really isn't an option. For those that fail to meet those high expectations (for whatever reason) it can be brutal. I have also heard said ...

Re: Tithing

Juts don't go to my or my children's face and say that we are disappointing God. Let God be the judge of that one. Yes, part of my effort to stayLDS has been visiting with my bishop once or twice a year and feeling like a deadbeat dad for non payment of tithes. Nobody has called me that. That is my...

Re: Tithing

I don't really have more to add to what Curt, Gerald and Roy have said. I pay tithing on net and also consider paying on increase from time to time. I don't pay with the expectation of benefit but I do benefit from having a warm building in the winter and cool building in the summer, a picnic in th...

Re: Seeing the Word of Wisdom through a New Lens

I think part of what makes the word of wisdom (and most other commandments) become toxic is not just the strictness of the rules but the membership judging and becoming un-Christlike to others based on their obedience or perception of faithfulness in regards to obedience. If family, friends, or lead...

Re: How much can the church change yet still remain credible?

'The Correct Name of the Church' talk was rough. Part of the challenge is what a speaker intended to say, what a speaker actually says, and what the listener hears are all distinct and different things. I don't know about blame, but Nelson didn't mince words, it was a rebuke. Tossing in a simple, "...
