The calling I don't want has finally come

So I've been making steady inroads back into engagement with the church. Almost two years ago, thanks to the support of this board, I baptized my oldest son. Then I blessed my new baby. Shortly after that, I accepted a minor calling—committee member for a big dinner our stake throws for the seniors ...

How to teach my daughter about masturbation

A few months ago, my wife was sitting with my 7-year-old daughter in the van at school. My daughter said, "Mom, I want to tell you the truth." And she proceeded to talk about how she does this thing called "making it happen." She does it by grappling the arm of the couch and pretending to be falling...

How would you answer this question from your teenager?

You might warn her against conflating the cause of someone being gay with religious doctrines and beliefs. If God wants or allows someone to be gay, does it really matter whether he does so through genetics, free agency, or some complicated mix of causes? Would the answer force the church to change ...

I have family in St George. It's way too hot for my taste. Good luck with the move!

Re: Giving my first baby blessing

The blessing went well. I was getting really nervous about it Sunday morning before church, to the point where I could hardly eat breakfast. But when we started getting all the kids ready, in the car, and seated, I was so busy I didn't have time to worry. I had pretty much prepared beforehand what I...

Re: Giving my first baby blessing

Gosh, I love this place. Thank you so much for all the advice and for sharing your stories. Roadrunner, thanks for the reminders about the mechanics. I was going to have to ask about that anyway. :D I appreciate Heber, Ray, and everyone who mentioned expressing the blessing as a hope, or asking for ...

Giving my first baby blessing

As many of you know, I haven't been a temple recommend holder for over ten years. The first priesthood ordinance I have performed in that time was my oldest son's baptism last year. I will now be giving my first baby blessing next Sunday. (My first five kids were blessed by either my dad or my wife'...
