Re: Talk input: follow the prophet

Sorry DJ, this doesn't help, I just need to vent. General conference wasn't that long ago so we got a lot of the follow the prophet business in the month leading up to conference. A lot. My issue? It's nearly always, "coming closer to the savior by following the prophet" and rarely (in my experience...

Re: Relaxing on the Rules

I've noticed that all too often the rules harm the obedient, without helping the disobedient. The people the rules are meant to rein in often just don't care about the rules, and will continue to disregard them no matter how many rules you have or how strict you make them. Meanwhile, those who do f...

Re: Inactive for months due to tithing. Can I still give my newborn a baby blessing with an expired reccomend?

My bishop told us that paying tithing that way was wrong and told us that if we wanted to pay an honest full tithes we needed to start paying 10% of our gross paycheck before any bills including our mortgage payment and the unpaid medical bills. Your bishop is wrong, against church policy wrong. Be...

Re: 4 Great Posts on the Middle Way

This departs from the analogy but.. A man bought an exquisite pearl for a high price. He wanted to showcase his beautiful pearl, so he searched and searched until he found a sufficiently ornate and beautiful box to put it in, and he invited others to come admire the pearl. The box was itself so fasc...

Re: In Defense of the Name Emphasis

Is the Mormon moniker considered bad? If so, if all we change is the name will whatever conditions that caused people to feel the label Mormon is negative persist and taint whatever new name (in this case old name) we give ourselves? It's anecdotal but I often hear scenarios play out where someone t...

Re: I can’t believe in anything anymore

I’m not as interested in altering the traditional definitions and understandings of terms in order to make my current beliefs still sound orthodox as I am in trying to figure out if I even believe at any level anymore. I do tend to get lost in definitions. Words are symbols, we create meanings behi...

Re: I can’t believe in anything anymore

I get hung up on definitions. One might say that there's no such thing as the supernatural, that by definition if something occurred it was natural, the issue is that we simply don't understand what we witnessed. Maybe that's just the word we use to symbolize that thought; supernatural is something ...

Re: Evangelical Millenial's at Odds With Their Faith

I'm not sure how to comment on the article without getting political. I really struggle in this camp and I'll try to tread lightly. I'll quote Jesus and lay the burden of the words at his feet: This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is fa...

Re: Prophets rule the roost

I don't mean to say that the top leaders have no concern for the average member, 2 hour church and all that, but I do lament that people that have legitimate concerns sometimes get on the excommunication radar if they find themselves out ahead of the leaders.
