Re: A Spiritual Ponzi Scheme

I (try to) wear many hats. I'm going to put on my atheist hat, sideways, for this post. I remember sitting in a typical PH lesson years ago. I think the lesson was on meeting the missionary goals of the ward, I'm not 100% sure of the subject, but I remember the takeaway. We were talking about all th...

Re: Vox LDS growth article

I don't doubt that the LDS church does a better job than other churches when it comes to retaining people but I think it would be more interesting to see a study that attempts to explain the reasons why. A good retention rate may be an indication that we do an extremely good job when it comes to soc...

I feel it too. I'm in a very large ward with a high activity rate and I've all but accepted that I probably won't be teaching at church ever again unless I move to a much smaller ward, they finally split our ward, or I get in people's ear for an opportunity. The issue is that I think there are a lot...

Re: Is it possible to pay tithing without the bishopric/clerks seeing the amount?

Your bishop was way out of line. Extremely out of line. This is directly from Handbook 1: The First Presidency has written: “The simplest statement we know of is the statement of the Lord himself, namely, that the members of the Church should pay ‘one-tenth of all their interest annually,’ which is ...

Re: Name of The Church - Version 152

Since we all know my opinion I will spare you the novel length diatribe in my head. My short answer: "By their fruits ye shall know them." That's all. I had a similar thought, though it's much more diatriby. If I had to guess (and I don't have to, I like to) I'd say your average ward breakdown is: ...

Re: Name of The Church - Version 152

In truth if focusing more on Jesus Christ in the name of the church helps members to focus more on Jesus Christ and helps non-members understand what we're really supposed to be about, I'm all for it. I haven't seen the fruits of this yet, but I'll be patient. Yeah, if it moves people's testimonies...

Re: Name of The Church - Version 152

From the Mormon  newsroom: https://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/church-name-alignment The Church’s official website will become ChurchofJesusChrist.org. This change is effective today, March 5, 2019, when the domain name ChurchofJesusChrist.org begins pointing to the LDS.org home page. In t...

Re: Gospel and Ethics Land Mine

I'm not the best person to ask for scholarly definitions for ethics but you have to be careful with the OT. Sometimes the message appears to be "might makes right."

Re: Gospel and Ethics Land Mine

One of the ethical schools of thought is that God sets the commandments and expects obedience. From this idea if God where to command the opposite of what he has heretofore commanded than that would change the ethical choice. This is an idea taught in Mormonism. Mormonism is kinda weird. Sometimes ...

Re: Church today -- mixed bag, some good stuff

It was F&T meeting. Four people gave their testimonies, two small children, a member of the BPric and someone that came up after the time had run out. Three others gave full on talks, one lasting about 5 minutes, another about 7 minutes and one (I was surprised no one from the BPric cut them short) ...
