Re: Plural Marriage and Families in Early Utah

Thank you for keeping me in check Ray. I have edited the post you referenced, but I must add that I think many, many people have been hurt BADLY by polygamy, though I admit most of the documented cases have come from splinter groups who have abused it even further than we probably ever did.

Re: Plural Marriage and Families in Early Utah

In addition to my earlier comment: The last paragraph of this article is just troubling to me. It seems like nothing but an attempt at saving face. In the quote below, I have mirrored the statements from the article with hypothetical statements to help illustrate why the logic bothers me so much. .....

Re: Plural Marriage and Families in Early Utah

Latter-day Saints do not understand all of God’s purposes for instituting, through His prophets, the practice of plural marriage during the 19th century. This implies that ultimately those who practiced it did so through blind obedience or because of cultural influence, which I have trouble honorin...

Re: Do you pay tithing?

I am not a TR holder anymore but have continued to pay a full tithe. However, I have a new plan for the new year. My wife does not bring in any income, but what I make is still as much hers as it is mine, so we're going to split the tithing and she can pay her half faithfully and I can decide what t...

Re: Great Piece from BCC

Nobody likes to be pigeonholed. We are all exceptions.
Great statement! This applies to our interactions with the church on so many levels.

Re: Are you concerned about your personal/family salvation?

When my wife and I were sealed in the temple, the sealer said something that struck me. He said, "It is likely that all of us here today will be in the celestial kingdom someday. In fact, I think there will be more people who find the celestial kingdom than people who don't. Many, many more." Someti...

Re: Becoming Better Saints through Interfaith Involvement

I came on here to post about this article since I loved it so much, but I had a feeling I wasn't the first one on here to see it. I also know that we Latter-day Saints take Jesus’s charge seriously to love our neighbor, clothe the naked, feed the hungry, and visit the imprisoned without ex...

Re: Does God Exempt Some Even Though Church Leaders Don't?

So what is more important? The rules, or the people? Like everything, it's a balancing act. You can't completely dismiss the rules, but they can't trump everything else. Tolle's interpretation of Rules vs. People really resonates with me. Below I highlighted a passage I love from A New Earth : Ther...

This is a wonderful question. Even Pope Francis has been posing this to his own people lately.

Re: Mormon Stories Podcast: 3 Interfaith Amigos

Haven't listened to all of them, but particularly liked Imam Jamal's discussion of Islam, since I've had very little exposure to that religion. I had never heard anyone explain what it means to be Muslim...basically that anyone who is trying to become free of the ego and be a good human being is con...
