Orthodox view of Change

There's an interesting article over at lds.org (er, is that churchofjesuschrist.org?) https://www.lds.org/blog/the-most-important-change-of-all This is a nice, fully orthodox view of the changing times and the potential for looking inward for improvement. I appreciate the tone and emphasis of the ar...

Re: Conservatism and Control vs. Autonomy and Respect

So, one thing I'll just mention about this thread, or more specifically, the title of this thread: I consider myself to be primarily conservative, and I would not equate conservatism with control nor consider it the opposite of either autonomy or respect. If I can be forthright for a moment, I kind ...

Re: Dealing with your own hypocrisy

I think it's too strong to use the term hypocrisy in association to occasional failure to live up to our own ideals. I would use that term more for intentional deceit associated with willful disregard for what we say. Made up example: let's say that I'm an alcoholic and I'm trying very hard to beat ...

Re: Atonement

This is generally how I see the atonement as well. For me, it all starts with a concept of 'sin' as not evil, but rather just boring human stuff. We are just average Joes (or Janes), and along with that comes all of our human foibles. But, Jesus offered a way ("The Way", the earliest Christians call...

Re: What is there left to change?

The RMN Presidency has been an important step forward. He hasn't changed anything that I would call major, but by all these small and rapid changes, he has introduced the idea that it is OK for the Church to make changes. This helps get us out of the mode of "we have always done it this way, so we w...

Re: Equality in priesthood between men and women

The reason for the current dialog that women do have priesthood authority (not to give, but to receive) and that the only distinction is in the office, appears on the surface to be for the purpose of placating women and to convince members that we are all equal. It's a step in the right direction, b...

Re: Was Nephi a real person?

In past society, we liked heroes. The focus was on how people could overcome weaknesses to do something great. This reflected our past view of ourselves. We all have weaknesses, but if we try hard, we have the potential to overcome and do something great. This meshes well with Christianity, BTW. In ...

Re: Equality in priesthood between men and women

There is definitely a shift in the way this is being described. However, I find it not only very unsatisfying, but more than a little frustrating as well. To me, it falls along the lines of saying "hate the sin, love the sinner". It's meant to soften a position, but all it does is makes the Church l...

Re: Estimating the Chances - Women in the Priesthood

I think our current RS and our current EQ would be re-branded as Women's Group and Men's Group. In GC, there would be the General Women's Session and the General Men's Session.

Estimating the Chances - Women in the Priesthood

With all the changes happening of late, I've started to wonder about Women in the Priesthood as a possible major change. I'm certain it will happen eventually, but my ponderings are about the likelihood of anyone from our current FP/Q12 making this change if they become the President. Here's what I'...
