Two Interesting Books

I've been reading two books that are interesting to read as a pair. The first is "Faith is Not Blind" by Bruce C. Hafen. It just came out in the past year. The other is "A Skeptic Discovers Mormonism" by Timberline Riggs which was published in 1941. They can both be read as an unusually long testimo...

Re: How much can the church change yet still remain credible?

Interesting that these changes have brought more stress to you. I say that because for me, one less hour of structured social church is a good thing. That's one less hour for bishops, clerks, leaders and so on to be fulfilling a stressful calling that usually requires spending time away from family...

Re: How much can the church change yet still remain credible?

RIght before conference there was a flurry of rumors that the Word of Wisdom was to be adjusted in some way. I was surprised how much that bothered me and how relieved I was when such a change did not come to pass. The odd thing is I don't feel particularly invested in that particular commandment. M...

The Nature of Men in the LDS Church

The discussion thread "Women in a Man's Church" has been an interesting read. Around the same time I was exploring that thread, I came across this post on Wheat and Tares https://wheatandtares.org/2019/05/21/shifting-mormon-identity/ It's interesting but what caught my eye was one of the comments. M...

Re: More than enough

The church is actually a typical charity. If most people knew how major charities were run then they would not give to them. Having worked with a small number of such organizations, I would agree. No question that some do precisely what charities do, expend most of their funds in the service of wha...

Re: My Best & Worst List

Thought provoking question...below are my resulting thoughts. BEST 1. Wards: There is something so very comforting to me about this local community. I do believe that bishops have the most important jobs in the Church and that a good ward can make up for lots of deficits in policy and doctrine. That...

Re: Conference Favorite - Not Favorite

I think Pres. Nelson sees GC meetings as worship services (perhaps as sacred as Sacrament Meeting), so he doesn't like shouts "disrupting" the spirit of the meetings. I think in his mind laughter at a joke is one thing; I think he sees shouting, even in joy, as different. Curt, I'm sure you're righ...

Re: Conference Favorite - Not Favorite

Not so much a talk but I thought President Nelson's concluding remarks a bit odd. His instructions to the congregation at the Conference Center regarding reactions to temple announcements just seemed a bit harsh. I'm not sure what is wrong with a few expressions of joy or surprise breaking up the (i...

Re: A Change in the Mission Statement....

My opinion? Absolutely! We all have priorities and we can't do it all. Another word: "boundaries." We can reset those boundaries as is necessary and if you need to draw back for a bit, well, the community will always be there but your family may not. (Kind of a variation on Matthew 26:11).

Re: How Happy Are You?

It waxes and wanes. Depends upon the day. Some days I'm fairly content. Others are hard. Right now I have three family members who have been in and out of the hospital in one week (all for different issues). One is my father who is quite elderly and MAY be in final decline. That's been a little toug...
