Re: My intro -- Trying to figure out Mormonism on my terms

This is IMO the toughest one to deal with. I did a post about "geographically" mapping out one's issues, and I believe that issues in this geography are the most difficult to overcome. What do you do when you feel like you aren't getting anything out of your association with fellow saints, or worse...

Re: How to handle tithing in a split family

I'd invite her to read Rock Waterman's take on tithing (http://www.puremormonism.blogspot.com). That may open her mind to more flexible approaches regarding tithing. Growing up, I thought that all "righteous" LDS paid 10% or more of the gross on anything they received. I had no concept of nuance. I ...

Re: Copy of talk or list on how to fellowship

Mercyngrace, That's a beautiful message and a good reminder. I will say I'm not totally convinced it works at the ward level. If the Bishop made that announcement, the same dozen ward members who always are the last ones cleaning the cultural hall and kitchen after a ward party, or cleaning the mee...

Re: Copy of talk or list on how to fellowship

I think the concept of "fellowshipping" has come to connote (for many people I know) building a comraderie for a specific purpose - whether it's reactivating someone or building a better working relationship in a presidency, keeping someone active, or being able to report 100% (or some other figure)...

Re: Likely Reduced Time Here Moving Forward

Enjoy the focus on IRL service, Ray. I walked away from posting a few years back for the same reason and found myself much happier (in spite of missing my online friends A TON!). I'm in the process of trying to build my own business so I can walk away from my job and reclaim more of my life for serv...

Re: How will you feel if your kids do not grow up active?

How would I feel? I'd like to think that my priority is that my children are happy and learn to live 'after the manner of happiness'. That doesn't require activity in the Mormon church but I believe it does require living according to a basic code of ethics. If my children love God and love their ne...

Re: Polygamy according to Pure Mormonism

When I first read this post at Pure Mormonism, I was completely caught off guard. Honestly, I wanted to believe it. Ultimately, I went to a source I felt I could trust for an honest assessment, a brilliant scholar who is also a member of the COC (same as the authors of the book Rock reviewed). He co...

Mercyngrace - Beyond loving your comment, which I do, I love when you can drop by. You have mentioned how full your life is - from my heart - thanks for chiming in. Just seeing your name lifts me. Thanks momof3. I have been stopping in to read since I've had some time off over the holidays. Feels l...

Re: Tithing: a Costly Leap of Faith

Okay - I read up through page 7 before my comment was just bursting to come out ;) Hopefully, I'm not repeating something that has already been said. In addition to the problem with income (as we moderns use the word) being equated to interest, flawed interpretations have been presented by the breth...

Re: Pope Francis and Pres. Uchtdorf Really Are Kindred Spiri

Ray,

What specifically do you hear from Pres. Uchtdorf which reminds you of the Pope's words? Just wondering if there is a specific talk you have in mind...

Thanks!
