Re: Kirby Does It Again: Breastfeeding and Other Bodily Functions

Hawkgrrrl referenced a good BCC blog post on the subject of modesty and sexuality. It was excellent and said much of what I was trying to say above. https://bycommonconsent.com/2013/06/18/men-sex-and-modesty/ If a women breastfeeding is a temptation, if she is an attack on the virtue of the Priestho...

Re: A Testimony (?) of Modesty

How much of what we teach in church is Mormon cultural baggage? How much of what we teach is structured to make the people better Mormons rather than better people? Last week's YW activity was a lesson on modesty and how to make modest and cute outfits followed by a photoshoot. The parents were aske...

Re: Kirby Does It Again: Breastfeeding and Other Bodily Functions

Currently breasts are hypersexualized in US culture. Efforts to hide breastfeeding does nothing to reduce this hyper sexualization. I actually believe that it does the opposite and that by increasing the forbidden aspect the curiosity and allure increase. Women's bodies are seen to be inherently sex...

Re: Homework on Sunday - Help Please

Amy, As an LDS woman seeking an education and charting a life course I hope you are familiar with the speech "“A Future Only God Could See for You” by Eva Witesman. It is truly impactful in that it empowers women to co-pilot their life trajectory with God. The entire speech is marvelous and offers a...

Re: TR Interview Grilling

I'm surprised people have gotten away with pushing back. I think it really depends on a variety of circumstances. Leadership roulette, your "cred" in the ward, your ability to push back in a soft mormonesque and sheepese way that does not make the questioner defensive, Leadership's ability to take ...

Re: Are My Beliefs Really My Own?

Heber, I think there are multiple pieces to this. first and foremost is to consider the full quote. If I don't understand the positive and negative implications of my beliefs, I don't understand my beliefs - and, in reality, they are not fully mine. Curt's paraphrase is helpful It is the difficult e...

Re: TR Interview Grilling

Great responses so far. I agree that there is limited opportunity for pushback. Also that any push back may easily be seen as stiffneckedness, obstinance, lack of repentance (as in "the wicked take the truth to be hard"). Push back may become reason for retaliation - though I do not think the leader...

My initial impression is that Jesus was the master at ministering to the marginalized. He has asked us to "feed his sheep".

Re: Choose God or Husband Article on LDS.org

I think a major complication of listening to a person with a F/C with the intent to understand is that by understanding their position your own position may shift. One piece of advice from some wonderful LDS instructors on marriage and communication - "In order to honor the relationship, it is impor...

Re: Home teacher shot

There was a story years ago about a man who came to a chapel. Asked for someone in authority and a Bishop came out to see him. The man shot the Bishop leaving behind the mother and 8 children. I sure hope the church ponied up with some kind of lifetime support payments for the woman and her childre...
