An Exercise in Perspectives on Church

Read these words to yourself.... This was the absolute worst week of Church ever Don’t try to convince me that There are really good people and Love is all that matters Because, when you take a closer look, This church has so many things wrong with it, This world is a pretty evil place and Even if S...

Re: Perhaps I'm a minority...

I appreciate that we can have thoughtful discussions on this forum, especially when we approach it with the idea to learn from others' perspectives, as you said... I see a lot of compassion in her. Maybe it is I, who is in need of further instruction on the matter... That's wise to approach topics l...

Re: Not paying tithing consequences?

It can sometimes be helpful to simply the issue and compartmentalize some things. For example, TR includes tithing. Because of that, if you want a temple recommend, you pay tithing. If you don't care about the TR, don't need to pay tithing. From there...everything can get more complicated as you see...

Re: A Matter of Food - Pathways Discussion Board Post

I agree with Roy. Many would see the Willie & martin experience as a meaningless tragedy. However, that is not the only perspective. My ancestors were in the Martin Handcart company. Heber was 13 yrs old when his father died (hence, my username on these forums...to always remind myself to keep the f...

Re: Pharisees, modern prophets, and God's will

It's a strange phenomenon, but my testimony has actually gotten stronger that this is indeed the true church, but that I now know my relationship with God does not have any man standing between it. I think this validates that you are on a pretty good path if you can sense this point. I believe God ...

Of course there is another possibility, we could be coming up to the time of the Great Filter.
The "great filter" idea could fit into scripture and doctrine nicely, just worded another way.

Re: Guilt and Shame

Guilt comes from within. Shame comes from others. I think Shame comes from within also. I feel ashamed of myself when I do something bad and it impacts others. Shaming others is trying to get them to feel that emotion, which could be good or bad but isn't inherently bad in all cases. So it can come...

Re: Questioning the perceived value of the scriptures.

I wish scripture was used more in talks and lessons in our church, not less. They do have value and we don't really understand them that well, I don't think. We go more off what conference talks are about than scripture, it seems to me. I think they are broad and vague. Kind of like general ed class...

Re: Reaction to Callister's apologetic talk

Unfortunately, the inspiration of JS was atrocious in identifying these changes/errors. He was changing the bible to make it better fit his theology. In doing so, JS was guilty of doing the same thing as some that made changes to the scriptures. He was making additional changes - not correcting pre...
