Re: An Afterlife?

Not God a politically, kingly sense, but God in the sense of being the self – that deep down basic whatever there is. And, you’re all that. Only you’re pretending you’re not. Fascinating thoughts. I love it. As far as what the afterlife would be...the 3 degress of glory, waking up from a mortal dre...

Re: Is belief a choice? Also, seriously? No really, seriously?

Back to the title question, "Is belief a choice?" Like with just about everything (including sexuality/gender identity), religious beliefs a combination of nature/nurture, and a *little* bit of choice (if any), in varying degrees from person to person. ... Sure, sexuality might usually have a bit m...

Re: Is belief a choice? Also, seriously? No really, seriously?

That's a great timeline for context, OON. I don't think the Church should have been involved and I think it was unfortunate. But it was/is within their right. What is within their right, and what is "right" are 2 different things for sure, and of course...as you were alluding...in hindsight it is ea...

Re: Is belief a choice? Also, seriously? No really, seriously?

I would love for the Church to issue a statement that in retrospect, it overplayed its concerns and regrets its support of Prop 8. That it now supports SSM as a civil entity and supports equal rights for all people, and asks in return simply not to be forced to employ SSM within its own institution...

Re: Is belief a choice? Also, seriously? No really, seriously?

What's disturbing to me is that increasingly, people oppose others who have different views in an ad hominem way. Good point. I like the dog-owner analogy. But don't you agree the church has put themselves in a tough spot by being less accepting of differences in the past, the us vs them ...

Re: Elizabeth Smart: Forgiveness is another word for self-love

I don't think it is something which was destined to happen to her, I totally reject any story or thought that would suggest such horror was supposed to happen to teach people lessons. What a horrible way to learn things in this mortal life!!! I think, as you said, we can turn bad things into good t...

Re: Does Programmed Service Build Community?

I think they do. Anything can become check listed. Does routine taking of the Sacrament or Eucharist build community? Community is built when your heart cares. Whether it's an assigned deal or something you do spontaneously, like helping a neighbor build a fence or haul off a chopped down tree. ......

Re: Is belief a choice? Also, seriously? No really, seriously?

It's a tricky situation to navigate, for sure. I don't envy church leaders. The big problem they are working against is this...and you brought it up...Prop 8 campaigns and past things said and published about how they talk about gay marriage...they can't just forget all that and now say... Hey...let...

Re: Meeting with the Branch President

I really like this update. Thanks for sharing. I needed to read this today. I particularly was struck by: when close enough in what we do, we transfer energy back and forth between each other and sustain a lot of light. When we are pushed away from each other, the energy and momentum dies. What a gr...

Re: Another "why people leave" survey

Can you imagine a doctor not trying to understand a patient's symptoms before treating? So too, when leaders understand better why people have differences of faith, they can be more effective ministers. You can't take an x-ray of faith changes in a person...perhaps the better analogy is to ask if a...
