Alternative to Fowler

I did a post today about the so-called "neo-apologists": https://wheatandtares.org/2017/08/22/neo-apologists/ A few interesting things in the comments. I like what Mary Ann says (quoting Kevin Barney) that there are 3 different types of apologists (or maybe even more accurately, 3 types of apologeti...

Re: How forward should I be about my disbelief in dating?

This is a tricky one. You say you don't believe, but I guess I would ask what that means exactly. Are you atheist, agnostic, or Christian? Something else? Or are you just a cafeteria Mormon of sorts, just not a TBM? Stating that you don't believe is going to be a turn off to most women on these site...

Re: To Be Seen for the Honors of Men? Lost reward?

https://bycommonconsent.com/2015/12/07/they-have-their-reward/ I blogged about this very topic in 2015, and in that post I referred to a talk I gave in a mission conference. Missionaries are particularly prone to care about the glory of their numbers. I think the problem is when people seek and are ...

Re: BYU and Cheap Tuition

Ray hit the nail on the head. Unlike other conservative religions, which is a contrast to our credit, we really do value higher education for our people. Even for women, whether the church has realistic expectations for what you can do with a degree you've never used or not.

Re: Swearing

I think you'll enjoy a little piece I wrote on swearing back in 2008: http://www.mormonmatters.org/2008/06/19/a-few-choice-words-on-swearing/ It includes a history of swearing in English, why certain words are considered profanity, and also how people who want to avoid it have created their own fake...

Re: James Hamula, First Quorum of the Seventy, Excommunicated

I'm tending to agree with Roy here. While Ray has some excellent points, this just smells to me like the church looking out for the church and leaving Elder Hamula under the bus. I could be wrong, of course, but that's the sense I'm getting from all of this. Well, they did excommunicate him. That's...

Re: May I have your, Myers-Briggs/Jung type, please?

Adam Conover is not a fan of the MBTI. I agree with these points about its validity, but I would add that it's primarily a self-awareness tool. I don't consider it "accurate" (it's self-reported) or really "scientific" (it's observational), but people do behave in certain ways. https://www.youtube.c...

Re: Not Judging

Many of us rely at least somewhat on a “reflected” sense-of-self: basically, we get at least some of our self-image and self-worth from the people in our close relationships. Then it becomes very disruptive to our self-concept when those people change. As a result, we become very manipulative in an...

Re: The Proclamation to the World: Spousal Responsibilities

I'm excited to see this old post get resurrected. I'll chime in with my thoughts as well. I am positive they understood the changing world and the reality of so many women needing to work outside the home. I think this is true for some, but not ALL of the Q15. But as time goes on, they are starting ...
