Re: The culture of marriage

Just a few things to add. Thanks, Ray, for those stats. Those are very interesting. One of our favorite stories is the 24 hour period when my oldest son (age 18 at the time) was getting set up at BYU as a freshman. At dinner in AZ, the waitress offered him a kids' menu. Then, the Costco in Provo ask...

Re: Fanny Alger, First Plural Wife?

My personal opinion? This was adultery, plain and simple. Emma didn't know or agree to it. Oliver (who had been JS's right hand and wasn't yet on the outs - that came because of this) called it what it was. It wasn't honest, open, straight-up "plural marriage" (if any of that crap is truly honest). ...

DT: I'm appalled, honestly. He's halfway put you in a disfellowship status and without actually committing any sin! Kind? I guess, but kindest cuts the cruelest piece.

Re: Of Testimonies and Twelve Year Olds

I don't think that anything a local leader can do will have any long-term effect on whether or not an LGBT individual stays in the church. Like I said above, the Q15 have set things up so that we must choose between being damned in the garden of Eden and leaving so we can live up to our full potent...

Re: Of Testimonies and Twelve Year Olds

According to Reddit ex/mormon thread the ward itself was outraged by the conduct of the leaders on the stand. Ward members since the event have been reaching out to Salt Lake, and Area Reps asking that the men involved be released. Wow - I hadn't seen that. I don't think anyone in the COB would agr...

Re: Of Testimonies and Twelve Year Olds

I don't like the staged aspect of it or the idea of people using a 12-year old for their own purposes, BUT from what the mother has said, it was Savannah who wanted to do this, and it wasn't the parents who wanted to make it public (again, this all was being discussed about 4 weeks ago when it happe...

Re: help me write a talk!

I've been in the same kind of situation many times. Here's what I would do: 1 - I like to talk about how people of other faiths view these things to provide a universalizing perspective. We have many things in common, and some differences we can learn from. For example, I'd probably highlight a few ...
