Re: Mental Exercise

dande48 - I like what Peter Enns says. He calls it the "sin of certainty." Claiming certainty in something that is not possible to be certain about is hubris. It's lacking in humility. It's fanatical. I sometimes wonder about more liberal religions that don't require codes of belief or orthodoxy of ...

Mental Exercise

A FB group I belong to had a post posed by a group member that I thought was an interesting question, very valid for those with doubts. Which is more of an issue for you: your doubts or people's reactions to those doubts? If people were warm, friendly and accepting of doubters, would that make it wo...

Re: Help me understand the importance of gender neutral language

I agree that it's because of the issue of non-binary gender primarily, but adding "man" or "woman" also changes the flavor of the word. At Amex, we mostly just dropped the "man" or "woman." For example, someone wasn't a "chairperson," but a "chair." Someone wasn't a "workperson," but a "worker."

Re: My Trip to Salt Lake City -- impressions

We lived in SLC for many years although I'm not from there, but we've lived elsewhere for 15 years now, and when we go back these are some of my thoughts: 1) Holy crap, there are a lot of trashy billboards everywhere! (Our city restricts these) 2) In general, things look dirtier and trashier than wh...

Re: Can We Just Get On With It

I was conducting in RS last month, and I kept making the joke that we had "Only X more three hour block Sundays, so LIVE IT UP!" or "This time in a month we'll all be chillin' at home!"

Re: Gospel Doctrine Duscussion about Slut Shaming

Yeah, a whole lot of our correlated materials rely on the correct assumption that the abysmal reading comprehension skills in our Gospel Doctrine classes are only surpassed by the complete unwillingness of class members to even read the material at all.

Sam Bee: I hear ya, but the horse is out of the barn. We already sold our souls for "free" internet access in this country. Time to lie down in the beds we've made.

Re: Announcements - Less of?

I'm torn. I think the announcements help with the community aspect. Plus, people are terrible at reading emails and most of my current ward refuse to be on social media which irks me to no end. But the announcements are really out of control some weeks. They take up about half the time we have in RS...

Re: What are the benefits of being a member of the church?

I'm with GBSmith: it's a social contract. The church is just where members meet other members and work together. When we moved to Singapore, there are social clubs there primarily for expats from different countries. Membership at the American Club was $20k per year. These clubs are somewhat exclusi...

Re: Sin-Resistant

I don't love or hate the phrase, and I agree with Curt that it's not necessarily that he misunderstands or dismisses the atonement. It's more of a motivational / creating a community we want approach, not a "you too can live a sin-free life and not need the atonement" approach. There's a real millen...
