Re: Elizabeth Smart: Forgiveness is another word for self-love

Believing bad things happen for a divinely-inspired reason is a privilege of people who don't face devastating and unbearable lives. (Specific events? Yes. Lives? No.) In practical terms, that view minimizes the pain of those who suffer the most, by imagining such suffering ultimately is good for th...

Re: Is belief a choice? Also, seriously? No really, seriously?

The USA has been a WASP "soft theocracy" for a long, long time. I don't have time to go into all of the reasons that is true, but we aren't out of the woods yet. Much of the current political struggle is to keep us from changing back into a clearer WASP theocracy than the recent diversity movement h...

"I AM" . . . Me

When the Old Testament records God giving Moses a name to share with the Israelites when they questioned his "mission", the name God gave was "I AM". I understand the ways in which that has been interpreted over the years, but my favorite interpretation of it is my own. I see it as saying descriptor...

Re: Does Programmed Service Build Community?

The idea that non-purely-motivated service is bad comes from a misinterpretation of the Biblical verse that says paying alms (helping others) for public recognition does not bring a reward in heaven. What people fail to recognize is that those who do so are said to "have their reward (already)" - wh...

Re: New hymnal is in the works! Some major, wonderful changes.

Now that we are talking about grace much more openly, I can see it being added - or, at the very least, allowed.

That is an example of why the second change I mentioned is so important. Even if it isn't included, it still may be sung (subject to leadership roulette, but at least possible).

Re: New hymnal is in the works! Some major, wonderful changes.

I was about to post some details from lds.org. (I added more to the title.) My favorite two changes: 1) National anthems are being removed. 2) "Sacred music of local interest may be made available to members by language through digital channels as appropriate and doctrinally correct." #1 is importan...

Re: The New Inactives - Seniors

It is not widespread here - except the extensive travel to see kids and grandkids. In the past, people tended to stay near extended family. Families are much more spread out now, but people with money still want to see their family regularly. It is so senseless to fight it that even older couple mis...
