Re: Daily Scripture Study

There is great power in reading inspiring things and being enlightened. Many members find the scriptures inspiring. Many members have thoughts hit them while reading the scriptures that are enlightening. I have had that sort of experience more than once - but I also have had that experience reading ...

Re: Abusing the Priesthood

My twisted mind immediately went to how some people call men who have been ordained to an office in the Priesthood by the term "the Priesthood", combined with an element of sexual activity for which some members and leaders (and booklet) use a stupid euphemism that includes the word "abuse". In thos...

Re: How can I enjoy staying?

One more thing: I have said here multiple times that if a leader calls me, they get me. They don't get the person they think I am; they get me. Therefore, I do what I can do and what I am comfortable doing and what I feel won't hurt myself or my family. I will NOT prioritize a calling over myself or...

Re: LDS Church Responds to Charlottesville White Supremacist Rally

That are astute observations, beefster and Sam - and they are within the parameters of the post. Having said that, let's not make this thread about politics, generally. Let's keep it focused on the Church's statements themselves. If we don't do that, the thread could spiral away from the post in a h...

Re: Swearing

Yep, the Jews avoided saying the name of God, because they saw no need to do so (no purpose or authority).

I don't like that approach, personally, since it feels too much like "He Who Must Not Be Named" - paeticularly since active punishment often was seen as a legitimate result of improper usage.

Re: How can I enjoy staying?

Thanks for posting. I hope we can help - now and more long-term. I don't know why, but a couple came to mind when I read your post. She was a member; they had children. He attended church every week with them, solely because he believed in "going to his wife and children's activities" - in being inv...

Re: Swearing

"Vain" means "conceited" ("He is vain.") and "of no consequence; without effect" ("He did it in vain.").

Taking the Lord's name in vain originally meant using it without authority, in a way that would not be honored and, therefore, have no eternal consequence or effect.

Re: <Fingers Crossed> Pathways, Here I come!

SD, just to be clear, I never said a thing about private vs. public education. My concern is with for-profit education and the abuses I have seen there. There are lots of excellent for-profit colleges; unfortunately, there also are a lot of shady, coercive, manipulative, over-priced for-profit colle...

Re: BYU and Cheap Tuition

One thing nobody has mentioned that I think is foundational: The leadership truly believes in the scriptural statements, "The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth," and, "Seek ye learning out of the best books (including books on non-religious topics)." We can disagree a...

Re: LDS Church Responds to Charlottesville White Supremacist Rally

Feiw, generally speaking, I am a pacifist. I make exceptions, however. There is an interesting quote that I can't find right now. It says something like: Non-violent opposition only works when your enemy has a conscience. In the BofM story of the Anti-Nephi-Lehis, pacifism worked only once, when som...
