Re: What IS the Priesthood and why is it needed?

I can't answer the central questions in any unique way. I certainly don't have special insight into them. However, I can say that there have been a few special times in my life when I truly felt an open connection to the divine and felt like I had been a conduit through that connection. That doesn't...

Re: An Introduction to Zen Buddhism

I have said on more than one occasion that if I did not love the concept of a Savior so much, even if I view it differently than many other members, I would consider myself a Buddhist Mormon. I see so many similarities between what I consider to be the ideals of each religion, including the theoreti...

Re: Elder Holland Talk on Reconciliation

I simply will say individual experiences and perspectives can be very different. In that light, I will say that I have heard Elder Holland preach reconciliation by leaders on more than one occasion. If I made a list of the current top leadership and the likelihood of each individual giving such a ta...

Re: He totally changed sacrament meeting

I have been fortunate to have lived in multiple wards where the Bishop actively asked people to focus on Christ somehow in their talks and also assigned spiritual topics.

It helped that I suggested that approach when I had the chance. :P

Re: Ward treating us like we're inactive?

Just two very generalized observations: 1) People don't like to treat people "badly" or "wrongly" - so, often, they err on the side of not treating people at all when they don't know how those people want to be treated. 2) People usually treat people the way those people treat them. Smiling people g...

Re: Been holding cards very close to vest.

Welcome! I am glad you found us.

We don't have "the answer" to anything, but I think we are a good, safe place to share "our current answers" and learn from each other.

Gospel Doctrine Duscussion about Slut Shaming

I have been teaching Gospel Doctrine for a couple of months as a temporary position. I love it. Today the lesson covered Daniel and Esther. I highlighted the "liken the scriptures unto ourselves" verse (1 Nephi 19:23) and led a good discussion about how differently we would judge those two heros bas...

Re: God's Law vs Man's Law Paradox

I think we try too hard to figure out exactly what we are supposed to do in order to be rewarded for what we do. In other words, I think we focus on externally imposed consequences too much. I love the idea that ALL the Law and the prophets hang on love - and that who we become is our only divine re...

Re: I was almost a school shooter

I love that quote, but I would suggest a second, complimentary version:
"Love the ones you feel deserve it the least, because you need that the most."

I like combining the two.

Re: God's Law vs Man's Law Paradox

I truly believe most people do the best they can, even if it looks to themselves and others like they aren't trying. I gave up trying to judge sin a long time ago and focused instead on just trying to do my best - and not stress out about what judgment I would receive in the end. Maybe that is a laz...
