Re: Estimating the Chances - Women in the Priesthood

Oaks actually said the leadership sees no historical precedent - so it would have to happen by revelation. He didn't hint it would or would not happen - but he left the door open for the possibility. With regard to this particular issue, he has been the most . . . willing to tak about it in a somewh...

Re: Estimating the Chances - Women in the Priesthood

We already have a talk stating endowed women hold the Priesthood as a divine endowment of power. Most members can't understand the talk, but we have it. The question then becomes ordination to offices in the administrative Priesthood. I can see it happening in my lifetime (I am 53.) as the next logi...

Re: Was Nephi a real person?

Honestly, I am a bit town on this question. I understand completely the arguments against any link to actual history, but there are really interesting parts of the BofM that I find hard to explain through the dominant arguments against historicity. 1 Nephi and Ether are fascinating, and there are ob...

Re: Rome Temple

I have no doubt the church leadership sees this as revelation. To repeat what I said earlier, I have no way of knowing whether it came from God, so I won't dispute the claim. I think it is fine to talk about our perceptions of revelation, but I personally am not comfortable making statements about w...

Re: My Lent Experience This Year

I love that quote.

A few years ago, I focused my New Year's Resolutions on being a little better at each element of the Sermon on the Mount - one element per month. The first year was mostly one beatitude per month. It was difficult, but it was the best resolution experience of my life.

Re: Rome Temple

Revelation is as revelation is perceived to be. I am sure the statements are completely honest and sincere. I wasn't part of the process, so I can't classify the conclusions one way or another. That is one thing I don't touch with a ten-foot pole - largely because I don't want others critiquing my o...

Re: Rome Temple

1) "Rumor has it" is not a solid way to frame this discussion. We have no idea, but I am skeptical of that cost. 2) This is a showcase temple. I am fine with that, given the location. It probably will become a Mecca-like location - the SLC temple of Europe. If that is the intent, I get it. 3) Photo ...

Re: Vox LDS growth article

One factor that is overlooked in the article is the active, individual-member missionary effort. One core aspect of total membership AND active membership is a stream of new membership outside just babies born to members. As a percentage of total membership and "active membership", the LDS Church do...

Re: Vox LDS growth article

All churches report membership numbers as broadly as possible - meaning they use whatever measurement shows the highest number that can be defended reasonably. I don't mean to imply they lie or intentionally deceive, although that happens sometimes, but rather that they report in a way that best exp...
