Re: When you feel the need to apologize for the church

Amen to dande48's last paragraph. That is a healthy, appropriate response.

Re: When you feel the need to apologize for the church

I never apologize for the Church. I don't have that responsibility or right. All I can do is express personal sorrow when practices and policies hurt someone. However, I am not shy about my views on issues where I disagree with certain policies or cultural practices. I also am open about historical ...

Re: Today's Quote in Sacrament Meeting

I love it. I miss the days when our POTUS could speak in grammatically correct, complete sentences. (Sorry. Couldn't resist.) My son makes it a point in his church talks to reference sources that are . . . unorthodox. His favorite right now is quoting Tupac (with an explanation that he is edi...

Re: Selfishness vs. Self-Care/Self-Preservation

In counseling, there is a maxim that a counselor can't help someone be healthy if that counselor isn't healthy. The key to me is whether someone still is focused on helping others, while recognizing that self-care is a constant need. It is the effort to find a proper balance that includes solid self...

Re: Feeling like an imposter, losing hope in the middle way

Fwiw, I don't like the term "THE middle way", since it still implies one true way. I walk my own way, which, for me, is within the broader parameters of the LDS Church. It isn't a middle way; it is my way.

Re: Asking to be released...

What dande48 said. Keep it simple, firm, and focused on your own personal inspiration. Start with something like, "I am sorry to have to do this, but," then use dande48's suggestion to end it. In Book of Mormon terms, this is what being an agent unto yourself looks like. It isn't the easy way, but i...

Re: Today's Observations

You noticed two things about humans who happened to be Mormon.

We like to think we are special and peculiar (in a good way), but we are more natural than we can see.

That also is true of humans, generally.

One eternal round comes to mind.

Re: Tribal Living instead of Being an Island (Quasi-Vent)

We sometimes refer to this forum as an Island of Misfit Toys. There is a HUGE difference between the idea that no (wo)man is an island (which I believe with some exceptions) and that islands are bad. There is a reason islands are some of the most visited vacation spots - and why we are encouraged to...

Re: Speaking up in class

When I say anything in class, I make sure I am speaking in "Mormonese". I also speak relatively slowly, pause to think for visual effect, and generally use a gentle tone. I can get away with a lot, since I know the scriptures and a lot of religious history pretty well - and since everyone knows I ha...
