Re: 9/13 Rasband face to face - the restoration proclamation

I agree that Harry’s question didn’t really get answered. I’m currently asking myself what the point of staying will be after I graduate from BYU. I can see why others stay and how the church works for them, but I’m not convinced there’s anything for me. The church focuses on the truth claims as the...

Re: Do you ever feel forgiven?

I've struggled with this a lot too and suffered from scrupulosity on my mission. For me after my faith crisis started one of the positive things that happened was that I stopped feeling so guilty all the time. A lot of the burden of guilt came from my own beliefs about myself, rather than God punish...

Re: Where is everyone?

I think it’s not just less activity here, but also in the church. We often have discussions here about newsworthy items and church announcements, but it seems like the leadership has been fairly absent lately. So there’s not a lot going on in the church to talk about.

Re: Online Seminary

I think the emphasis on rules and requirements to get “credit” is going to lead to a decrease in seminary attendance overall. Teenagers don’t exactly want more school, and that’s what it seems seminary is trying to become. As for the point of getting the credit for seminary, it does play a role in B...

Re: Metrics and Agency

“When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported, the rate of improvement accelerates.” This is the quote in Preach My Gospel that they always beat us over the head with. Yes, “performance” improves when measured and reported. But what is “performance”?...

Re: Would you ever intentionally lie?

For me, honesty is hard to evaluate without context. While in many situations lying is wrong, I think there are some situations where it is ok, and even situations where it is the moral choice. If telling the truth would lead to an immoral outcome (like ratting out human rights activists to an oppre...

Re: Unanswered Prayers and Mental Health

I think when praying with the expectation that something will actually occur, it sets you up for disappointment when it doesn't happen. This was basically the start of my faith crisis. I spent two years battling mental health issues as a missionary, holding out hope that my prayers would be answered...

Re: Does God answer every prayer?

I think you would have to start by defining what it means to "answer" a prayer. If you ask a yes or no question, do you need a yes or no response? What if God's a politician who dodges the question and changes the topic? Does that count? If you ask for help or guidance, do you need to actually recei...

Re: What does a Temple Recommend mean to you?

I think a lot of people, including many church leaders, see a temple recommend as incentivizing activity in the church. To them, the temple is a wonderful, spiritual experience that will strengthen people's testimony and get them to be more active. And the temple recommend makes sure you can have th...

Re: Missionary Work in light of the Pandemic

If the missionaries are going to be stuck in their apartments they should at least loosen up the rules and let them watch a few movies, read normal books, or listen to “worldly” music. Just to maintain sanity. I would guess missionaries are going through all of the years-old lists of potential inves...
