Re: Missionaries can call home weekly

Hard to believe, but I find this change a mixed bad. As a parent, I’m thrilled with this change. I honestly believe my son would still be serving in the mission field if his (temporary) MP had allowed our son more contact with us instead of cracking down as he did. So this is 6 months too late. On m...

Re: The Indifference Cycle

Its fascinating to me the range of experiences we each have in this church. On one hand, it’s what makes it special. On the other, it’s maddening. Recently I have had some in-depth conversations with my DW about my lack of TR. she is very much of Hebers view. She believes, even with knowledge of cer...

Re: Special Sunday School class

Could it be that the boat (church) has an old guy that is hard of hearing driving, and that the boat veers to the right and that the hull is dinged and old? That has got to be one of the most unintentionally bad metaphors in one of the worst talks I have ever heard. Did you forget the part about th...

Re: How do I talk to my wife about my faith crisis?

This is one of the hardest things you will have to do. I am over 10 years into the process of “talking with my wife.” I will say most of that time was halfhearted because I didn’t know what I wanted, and I didn’t know how to say it. I’ve been much braver the last 6 months, and as of a week or so ago...

Re: My Joseph Smith Narrative

I love all these narratives. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this is what was taught openly and prolifically in the church? There is still plenty of room for spirituality and God in each of these accounts.

All religious origin stories are weird and incredible. Why not embrace it?

Re: Mental Exercise

Sorry for the delay responding, Roy. I had to find where I had read that quote. It took me a minute. The quote is: "Mature spirituality insists that we hold out for meaning instead of settling for mere answers." There is much more to it. You can see it in it's full context here: https://cac.org/your...

Re: Mental Exercise

After decades of struggle, I have finally thrown in the towel on reconciling church history. To me it can’t be done. But that doesn’t make everything about the church bad or false. In fact, I read a quote recently that really resonated with me. It directed me to stop looking for answers and instead ...

Re: New Sunday School - Not.

I think there is a lot to be said for smaller, more intimate study classes. I’ve mentioned in another thread I’m a participant in a special Sunday school class with no set curriculum. People at first were wondering why we were all meeting in the bishops office. Word got out that it was an alternativ...

Re: Special Sunday School class

Today was day #2 of our monthly special needs Sunday school class. Given some recent events in my life, as well as my current state of belief I do not want to attend this class anymore. That said it’s orobably better than the alternative, which is the bland, oftimes condescending discussions in norm...

Re: Inactive for months due to tithing. Can I still give my newborn a baby blessing with an expired reccomend?

I'd say just jump in and pay what you feel comfortable with. This x1000. Whatever your tithing number is, it’s between you and the God. Any bishop who really drills down on this is overreaching. Furthermore, whatever you pay, pay directly to the church. If done so properly the amount paid will not ...
